I am very belatedly sharing my memories of Dave. I'm afraid we'd been out of touch for quite some time. I knew him back when we were both at George School, and he and I enjoyed a memorable sailing trip to the Bahamas along with 6 others: my parents and sister, 2 other George School students, and a professor. Dave was an utter joy to be around, so fun and creative and up for anything we were doing. I am truly sorry we lost touch with each other all these years. I recently found an old journal I kept of that trip, and so I thought I'd look him up and maybe share some memories, and now I find it's too late. Very sad to hear of his passing. He was a really great guy!

Dave was a Prince. He was also selfless, inspiring, and helpful. I have just now learned of Dave's passing and I wanted to write in this archive.

Dear Pheobe and Bob- It is with sadness and great surprise that I learned of David's passing. He always had a warm and kind greeting for us at Quaker Meeting. Although I did not know David well, I could feel his good, caring heart, his loving essence was always present and could was palpable. Sending my compassion and blessings to all your loved ones, David, for the great loss of your passing.

David was one of the most creative and big-picture people I ever met. We, and others, shared the same large office at Shelburne Farms and though our jobs didn't much intersect, I always enjoyed his energy, thoughtfulness and humor. Many great memories as neighbors in Monkton too. David holds a place in my heart and in my memories, and I am saddened that there won't be any more delightful encounters with him. All the best to the family.

Dave was a gentle soul, a kind spirit, and a caring heart. His work was always in the service of others and in the service of our community. Rest in peace, my friend.

David was a classmate of mine in both the College of Education and in the Environmental Program at UVM. I have fond memories of David's warmth, humor and drive. He accomplished many things in a variety of roles; these should make his family and friends proud. I just wish I had stayed in touch with him, as our passion for environmental issues, education and making a difference in one's community never wavered for either of us. My sincere condolences to his wife and children, and to his extended family and all of his colleagues over the years. His spirit will most certainly live on in the Green Mountains.

Dear Julie and family,
It was with great sadness I read of Davids death.
YET --- I did feel myself smiling at his image in the paper and the warmth and extending sense of heart that radiates from his smile.
I am so so sorry for your loss. I know nothing can be said that can lessen this loss but a dear friend said to me when Roland, my husband, died twenty years ago, it does not go away, it only comes less often.
You and your family were truly blessed as David was one of the sweetest and truly caring gentle men I have known. This is a true gift --- of and for humanity.
Though our times crossed little after Shelburne Farms there has always be a genuine warmth there. I am so happy for you, Julie, as many people do not find a creative and complimentary mate so rooted in what is important in living.
I am hoping that you can rejoice (maybe not at this time) in the remarkable lives you crafted together and with your family and that you each travel forward knowing his spirit is there and a part of you, always.
My thoughts are with you,
Lynda Reeves McIntyre

I am so very sorry to see this in the paper. I knew David from the outing club when we were at UVM many many years ago. There were several of us who went on many hikes and canoe trips together through the club- David was always kind, funny and supportive. He was a great outdoors person, he was very skilled with map and compass. Just a wonderful wonderful person!
My condolences to his family and friends. May his spirit live on in the Green Mountains.

Sad to hear this news, and to miss the celebration of life as I am now living out in Colorado. Dave was a wonderful colleague when I was at VEIC. He added a spark of mischief that was always a delight in a workplace that otherwise took itself Very Seriously. He was an original and will be missed.

Dave was one of the finest people Ive ever known. He had such wonderful energy, enthusiasm, creativity, good will, and generosity of spirit. He was radiant. I got to know him and become his friend when he contacted me out of the blue, offering his help in rescuing Dog Mountain in St. Johnsbury after my sister Gwen Huneck died. Dave had a vision that Dog Mountain could become a self-sustaining non-profit with the potential to carry on in perpetuity, and he worked selflessly and tirelessly to help see that vision through to fruition. It took a couple of years, but it happened, and it wouldnt have happened without Dave. It was incredibly generous of him to step forward that way, but that was Dave. I learned so much from him, not least from the example of his positivity, commitment, and good humor. He saw something that he felt needed doing, and he pitched in to make it happen. He volunteered. More than anything, though, he was just a wonderful man and friend, and I will miss him very much.

We are so sorry to hear of Daves death. Dave was a gentle spirit with a smile that lit the world. He made so many contributions to the Vermont he loved, but his heart and soul were always with his cherished wife Juliet and his beloved children Molly and Cole. We will miss his joyous, optimistic spirit. With deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

We admired Dave's kind and gentle spirit so much and are very saddened by this news. We will miss his leadership on environmental responsibility, to which he added advocacy for fossil fuel divestment. His presence was always comforting and he had a knack for making people at ease. We will always be better because we got to know and spend time with him. We will miss him sorely at our Social Venture gatherings. We are heartbroken by his passing but will honor him by carrying on a part of his torch.

I am heartbroken to hear that Vermont has lost the magnificent Dave Barash. I was fortunate enough to know and work with him on policy issues for the Vt Businesses for Social Responsibility. His intelligence, thoughtfulness, kindness, good taste, earthy nature, pleasant smile, good hearted laughs and perseverance were light years above most people I have ever known. These qualities were enough within themselves and yet he chose to reach high and make a huge impact on the larger community. Without Dave, we would not have the Sustainable Jobs Fund, the environmental protections we all enjoy, and the agreement that a workplace should embrace respect for employees, the community and the environment as well as the bottom line. To Dave, we owe deep gratitude for the energetic, loving community we all share here in Vermont. Thank you Dave and Juliette for the sacrifices you made and all the good work you invested during those challenging years. You both have my deepest respect. His life was well lived and I believe his presence will forever "keep on truckin". With much love and hugs to the closest members of his tribe. Julie Davis

This is horrible news. I first got to know Dave at Shelburne Farms- I then got to collaborate with Dave over the years, which was always fun-- his countenance always beamed. RIP Dave.

David led an environmental studies class to Shelburne Farms which was the first time I had been there. It led to my work in the gardens there for four years. Some of the best years of my life and all due to his encouragement of my interests. What a good soul
