David Farr Obituary

Published by The Brattleboro Reformer on Sep. 12, 2020.
David Arthur Farr, 79, died peacefully in his sleep on September 2, 2020. David was born in Barre, VT on May 6, 1941, son of Howard Parker Farr and Nadine Bennett. He grew up in Brattleboro, VT and was active in skiing, baseball, boy scouts and hiked much of the Long Trail in Vermont with his father Howard. After graduating from Brattleboro High School, he went on to earn both a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the oldest private military school in the country, Norwich University in Northfield VT. While at Norwich, David met his future wife, Judith Bailey Allen who survives him, they were married in White Memorial Chapel at Norwich on June 27, 1964 and enjoyed a love affair that would endure over 55 years. David was an avid ski jumper and was inducted into the Norwich Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011. After college, David rose to the rank of Captain in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. During this time, Dave and Judy started a family having two children Stephen (of Needham, MA) and Heidi (of Brooksville, FL). In 1969 David served his country and was sent to Vietnam for a 1-year tour. While in the Army, David was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. Upon his return, David left the military and finished a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA. David joined a private engineering consultant firm, Hamilton Engineering Associates and moved the family to Nashua, NH in 1972. David eventually bought HEA and became president. David was active in the Nashua community during the 36 years they lived in New Hampshire. He was president of the Nashua West Rotary club and was designated a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International by the Nashua West Rotary Club. He was also elected to the Board of Commissioners for Nashua Public Works in 1996 serving until 2000. He was president of the American Society of Civil Engineers - New Hampshire Section from 1982-1983. David was also a lifetime member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Vermont, Brattleboro Lodge No. 102 with over 55-years of service. Dave and Judy retired to Brooksville Florida full time in 2008. In their retirement, David was president of the Rotary Recreational Vehicle Fellowship club and both Dave and Judy traveled to Australia and New Zealand for the Rotary International convention in 2014. David and Judy have traveled to all 50 states, most in their 30-ft RV which was the source of much enjoyment for them both over the past 20 years. David is survived by a younger brother Daryl Farr (of Olathe, Kansas), a younger sister, Susan Timney (of Brooksville, FL), his son Stephen Farr and daughter in-law Mary Kusko Farr, daughter Heidi Farr, and grand-daughters Amanda Farr and Julia Farr both of Needham, MA. Dave hired me as a consultant for a project or two in the mid to late 1980's when I was just starting my business. Dave and my Dad both went to Norwich. Dave and I both had a pencil collection. Dave's was on display in his office. I appreciate all I learned while working with Dave and his project manager Ron Bourcier. Thanks Dave.

David was a gentleman who served his country , his family and his community. I spent many hours learning to ski jump in his, and his brother David’s, back yard. I also followed him through Rotary.

I was a classmate of David and remember him well. His obituary was very well written and recalls his long list of accomplishments. I was also stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA but did not know he may have been there at the same time. I send my sincere condolences to his wife and family. David is now resting in the eternal comfort of God's arms.

I remember Dave as a very bright person with a friendly heart. He was a top engineering student and he was always a regular cadet and highly respected.

I remember David from our days at Norwich. We spent time in the same companies and I recall him as a bright, friendly, all round great person. Never had the opportunity to serve with him, but his reputation as a fine soldier followed him. My deepest condolences to the family during this time.

Sue, I am saddened to read of the loss of your brother David. He was an honorable person having given much to our country and national/local civic organizations. Your transition from our home town allowed additional memories to be added to those of decades ago. May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

My heart goes out to David's family. David was our 'Brattleboro Reformer paper boy' for several years in the 1950's; also a fellow high school friend at BHS. Our family lived on Beech Street near Green Street School. I have often wondered where he settled and it seems he lived a rich life filled with much happiness and many contributions to his country and community.

With sincere sympathy and prayers, Jean (Decker) Newell
