David Bobo Mullens, longtime resident of Clarksdale, Mississippi, died in Nashville on Saturday, September 23, 2017, after a long illness. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Mr. Mullens attended Mississippi State University and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played football. After serving in the Air Force, he returned to his home town in Mississippi, where he entered his family’s farming business.
Mr. Mullens had a zest for travel and was an active hiker in the Rockies and the Pyrenees. He enjoyed camping and fishing in Alaska on multiple occasions. An experienced pilot, he frequently flew his plane with family and friends to various destinations in North America and Europe.
He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarksdale and was involved in many civic and faith-based activities throughout his life. He worked tirelessly as a supporter of Habitat for Humanity and served as a volunteer pilot for the Rotary project Happy Faces.
Mr. Mullens was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Anderson Mullens, originally of Sumner, Mississippi; brother Edwin John Mullens III, of Clarksdale, MS; and sister Gloria Tate of Hamilton, Ontario. He is survived by his wife Betty Maynard Mullens, of Nashville; daughters Melissa Kuhl of Oxford, Mississippi; and Merri Donna Mullens of Destin, Florida; son David Mullens, Jr., of Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also leaves step-children Norma Maynard Roessler of Tucson, Arizona; Elizabeth Maynard Jones of Boynton Beach, Florida; and William Maynard of Nashville.
