FOUR-TIME MR. UNIVERSE AND MR. AMERICA BODYBUILDING CHAMPION

Dennis Tinerino, a four-time Mr. Universe, Mr. America, and Hall of Fame Bodybuilder who went on to become a Christian evangelist with a worldwide ministry, has died. He was 64.

Tinerino died Friday morning May 7 at Northridge Community Hospital in Northridge, California after an 18-month battle with stomach cancer.

Dennis Tinerino was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York on December 23, 1945, the second son of third-generation Italian-American parents. His family moved to Brownsville, Brooklyn when Dennis was eight years old. His father Carmine was a dockworker and Golden Gloves boxer who took Dennis to his first workouts at the Brooklyn Central YMCA when Dennis was 12 years old.

The legendary bodybuilder won his first title as Mr. Brooklyn in 1964. He followed that up with 11 additional titles, including Mr. New York City, and Mr. America in 1967. After winning Mr. America, he competed in the 1967 Mr. Universe, finishing in second place to an up and coming Arnold Schwarzenegger. He came back to win the NABBA Mr. Universe title in England in 1968. Three more Mr. Universe titles followed in 1975, 1980 and 1981. Tinerino also won the title of Pro Mr. Natural America in 1978.

A regular competitor in the Mr. Olympia contests from 1977 through 1982, his highest finish was second in the heavyweight division in 1979. Throughout his career, Tinerino graced the cover of dozens of bodybuilding and fitness magazines, including Muscle & Fitness, Muscular Development, Iron Man, and Strength & Health. He was also featured in many fitness and training ads, and authored his own weight training manuals.

Tinerino was mentored by bodybuilding legends Bill Pearl and Joe Abbenda. He competed against some of the top name bodybuilders in the golden age of the sport, including Reg Park, Dave Draper, Sergio Oliva, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Franco Columbu and Frank Zane. Best known for his doorwide shoulders and washboard abs, ?Dennis was one of the best bodybuilders of his era. His blend of size and shape was a classic combination that took him to Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe? according to Joe Weider, the ?Father of Bodybuilding? and founder of the IFBB (International Federation of Body Building.)

Among other career accomplishments, Tinerino was named to several Halls of Fame, including the AAU Hall of Fame, the Italian American Sports Hall of Fame, the Oldetime Barbell & Strongmen Hall of Fame, the National Fitness Hall of Fame, and in 2006, the IFBB Body Building Hall of Fame.

In 1970 Dennis met and married the love of his life, Anita Conti and together they appeared on the December 1971 cover of Strength & Health Magazine. They moved from Queens, New York to California in 1974 and had three children, Tara, Marissa and Dennis-John.

A SAG actor, Tinerino had several roles in TV commercials and movies, including ?Hercules in New York,? with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After undergoing a spiritual conversion in 1979, Dennis became an ordained Christian minister and founded Dennis Tinerino Ministries. He traveled the world and preached in dozens of countries including England, Italy, Greece, Japan and Australia, as well as throughout the United States.

He was associated with such well-known evangelists as Dr. Jerry Savelle, Pastor Ray McCauley, and Rodney Howard-Browne. Dennis often humorously referred to himself as ?The Sermonator? a reference to his long time rival and friend, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was known as ?The Terminator? and most recently ?The Governator.?

Tinerino?s life and spiritual journey are documented in his autobiography, ?Super Size Your Faith,? which was published in 2006.

Along the way Tinerino?s testimony and preaching touched millions of lives around the world. He was loved and respected throughout the Christian community. A big man with a big heart, he was known for his larger-than-life, joyous and fun personality.

Tinerino is survived by his wife Anita, two daughters, Tara and Marissa, son Dennis-John, son-in-law Eli Flora, parents Carmine and Mary, brothers Salvatore and Laurence, nieces Andrea Tinerino McMahon and Ilona Tinerino-Allen, and nephews Vincent and Jared.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday May 12th at Church on the Way, 14300 Sherman Way in Van Nuys, California, East Campus at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park - Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be sent to a memorial fund at www.tinerino.com.

I briefly met Dennis at The Beacon Theater in Manhattan, back in the late 70,s, along with others such as Ed Corney, Bill Grant, Ken Waller, Mike Katz, Matt Ferrigno. He stopped to talk to the photographer who went to the gym I went to- Olympia Gym in Middle Village-Queens. I remembered at that moment of his gentle & polite personality. As for me, I grew up in Brooklyn's Bushwick section, & attended Christ The King High School. Years later when I lived in Goodyear, AZ, I attended The River Church, where Pastor Ron Villar, also into bodybuilding, told me he knew Dennis & that he became a follower of The Lord Jesus Christ & went on to Heaven. Its brings me great joy that Dennis chose Christ to be his Lord & Savior. Amen! Well done good & faithful servant.

My condolences to the Tinerino family, I met Dennis at USC Norris Cancer Hospital at the beginning of his battle with cancer. Dennis was a guy that you felt like you knew him all your life. We spoke of God and I shared to him my battle with this dreaded disease and how no matter the outcome God would be there for us, and we would spend eternity with him in heaven. He brought me a copy of his book and autographed it for me and as I read it I saw all he had to overcome in his life as I did and realized all the blessings Jesus has for us if we just follow him. God has taken him home and he never has to suffer again.

I just want to say how much I am going to miss my friend Dennis. I know the life he led and that he considered it a testamony to what a loving God can do in the life of someone. And I know he is in a place where he can truly see the fruits of what he has acomplished here on earth. But I still regret that I was not able to spend more time with him and get to know both he and Anita and his family a bit more. Dennis you are missed buddy...

I have never met anyone else like Dennis....He was so spiritual and yet so down to earth. A very humble man with a wonderful love for God and for people. And what an amazing sense of humour! On one of his visits to the UK we were driving him to the airport and in the middle of our conversation he began to prophesy over us. After prophesying, he carried on with his conversation as if nothing had happened! That event stuck with me as I witnessed someone living life with his ears continually open to the voice and leading of God. You could really see that Dennis and his wife Anita had dedicated their whole lives to serving God. Such amazing people....
My heart goes out to Anita and the family. There is no consolation other than the knowledge that one day you will all be reunited.
My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.
Much love,
Joanna Di Somma (Bristol, UK)

Condolence letter

In the name of my church and myself, I want to express my shock and condolence of our good friend, Dennis. His time and ministry here was a refreshment; the movement of the Holy Spirit, healing, and touch of God. Dennis’ story and testimony is such a life-giving, refreshing testimony to what God can do.

Personally, I’ve never forgotten him and I don’t think I will ever forget Dennis’ impact on me and our people. More than his message, his life is such a great message. I can say that Dennis is one of the best Christians I’ve met in my life. He was real, genuine and pure – things that are so difficult to come across these days. His life has left a deep mark on my life.

Rest in peace Dennis. May the Lord comfort Anita and the children greatly.

Had the privilege to have known Dennis and spend time with him whenever he was over here in the U.K preaching in Bristol/Bath as he called it. He has such a special place in my heart and I will miss him. He was the real deal, a true modern day prophet. Recently when we went through a loss someone said that they aren't in our past but in our future. Dennis I so look forward to the day when we will meet again. We are praying for the Tinerino family and that the legacy of faith left behind by Dennis will continue.

I still read my words of prophecy that Dennis spoke into my life and am beginning to see them come to pass. He thought I spoke fluent Italian and if I had, I would have joined his mission trip to Naples last November. Ciao amico mia...until we meet again.

May 11, 2010

Dennis Tinerino inspired and transformed many lives. I first met him and his lovely wife Anita at a house meeting. I was a new believer just moved from the east coast. God used him to speak into my life...my life was transformed, and I had a better understanding of Gods will in my life. Til this day , because of his obedience I can be used by God . He was transparent...I'm grateful. Thank you ! Our prayers are with Anita and family .

I met Dennis at Michael-Johns Ministry in San Jose, and he was such a real and genuine speaker, and he had prophesied over me and when I went to LA , he was there supportive and I loved his ministry and he prayed again for me just 6 months ago. I love you Dennis and your wonderful wife Anita, and I am so thankful that God blessed me the joy of having you as a friend and such an awesome man of God who genuinely cared for my soul. My condolences to Dennis's family and my prayers with them too.

I met Dennis in 1990 when my family and I moved to the USA from Australia. He preached at the church I pastored in Marin County California, he used to stay with us in our home and we became great friends over the years. He was a wonderful preacher and prophetic Evangelist touching countless lives. When we moved to Florida Dennis stayed in regular phone communication and he and Anita even came to visit and pray for our 28 year old son Aaron in the St Pete ICU unit in 2008. Aaron was critically ill with Lymphoma and Pneumonia at that time but thankfully lived another 18 months because of the faithful prayers of people like Dennis, his parents and many Christians all over the world praying for him. Aaron passed away only 2 months ago and Dennis was very sad to hear that as he really loved us and our son.
Dennis was one of the most Christlike men and ministers I have ever met in my 33 years of pastoral and evangelistic ministry.
What really struck me was his amazing way of treating unknown average Joes with the same degree of love and attentive kindness as he would treat a huge star /celebrity or an internationally famous minister. This why I say he was and still is (even more so in Heaven) an amazingly Christlike minister and man. I remember the time he told me when he was scheduled to meet with 2 international megastars (who were also personal friends of his) at an upscale London Hotel. Dennis said he arrived on time to see them but was detained in the lobby when he started sharing the Gospel with one of the bellhops, as it turned out time flew and he was so consumed with praying with the bellhop he forgot about the stars waiting for him elsewhere in the hotel. He missed his time with the stars but was happy he had done the will of God praying with the staffmember.
Another time I was with Dennis and some well known ministers at a California church and they were waiting for Dennis in the Limo outside while he prayed with and counseled an usher in the church. This was just what Jesus would have done I thought, Dennis was genuinely unmoved by a persons socio economic status or notoriety, he treated everybody the same and he was happy to be driven in a limo with the big shots or be taken in a second hand clunker with a poor brother if he felt God wanted him to help someone in need.
This is a very rare quality and amazingly Christlike, the church would be in lot better shape today if more people had this attitude.
Dennis T we will miss you heaps but know we will all meet around the Throne some day in Glory. I know the souwinners Crown you will receive there will be beyond description.
Love to Anita and family
