Diana Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2016.
Diana was born on April 15th, 1963 to Sandra and Joseph Pegg in Oshawa, Ontario. At McMaster University, she met her partner Mark on a blind date. They were together for 34 years.

After McMaster, Diana became a nurse. She completed her Masters of Nursing at U of T and became a Professor of Nursing at Dalhousie University. Her students voted her as their favourite nursing faculty. Diana meant a lot to everyone who knew her. Each moment she had with others was a special one.

Family was always very important to her. Her parents would go with Diana to the Farmer's market to indulge in cinnamon rolls. Diana had a sweet spot for her brothers' John and Steven who she lovingly teased. Her nieces and nephews were never far from her thoughts. She was always able to find unique and thoughtful gifts for them.

Diana enjoyed walking in Point Pleasant Park and Lawrencetown Beach to be close to the oceans crashing waves, and finding inspiration for her pottery and photography. As a certified Master Gardener, gardening was a passion. She got her love for gardening from her father and her uncle Edward.

She was an advocate for the underprivileged and human rights. She was an amazing athlete, bicycling all year round and at the World Out Games, she placed amongst the top five Masters swimmers in Canada. Diana was also a writer and a musician. She was truly a multidimensional person and will be missed greatly.

Memorial reception will be held on Monday, January 2, 2017 from 1-3 pm at Cruikshank's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax.

I shared an office with Diana at Sunnybrook . A committed, caring, lovely all around person is my memory of Diana. So smart too - a nurse extraordinaire. It was my pleasure to have crossed paths with her. (Angela Mackie, North Vancouver)

Diana was a bright light in so many ways when we worked at Sunnybrook. Ever open, loving, compassionate, and generous. I am so sad to hear of her untimely death and send my heartfelt condolences to all her family, friends, and loved ones.

I am so sorry to have missed reading about Diana's death during the Christmas Season. I enjoyed working with her on the Pastoral Care Committee at Saint Andrew's United Church in Halifax. She was only with us briefly due to ill health but was a very inspirational woman. I enjoyed having a coffee break with her and having a great chat about nursing and her career. She was such and accomplished lady ( nurse and sports woman) and I enjoyed spending time with her. I am very sad to have missed the visitation for her. Betty Anderson

I am very saddened to hear of Diana's passing. I had the honour of working with her at Sunnybrook. She was an amazing mentor to me and the reason I am where I am today. I remember many fantastic bike rides home from Sunnybrook with her where there was always laughter and encouragement. My thoughts and prayers are with all of Diana's family.

How terribly sad to read of Diana's death. We worked together many years ago in the ICU at Sunnybrook. She was an excellent nurse, fun loving and always willing to lend a helping hand. My thoughts are with her family.

Mark and family : Damn sad to hear the passing of such a wonderful, caring and vibrant spirit. Diana was a loving person who constantly cared about others and was sure to brighten your day. Her love of the Boss had me see my first concert and her love of Sting was infectious. Most of all her devotion to Mark, her family and her patients is a standard for all of us to strive for.

Dear Mark and family.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all. Although I never met Diana, Mark shared with me stories about Diana's passion for gardening and I very much admired her pottery creations. Although Diana has departed physically, her spirit and passion for life will live on in your hearts and memories. I wish for you comfort in knowing that she has no more pain and peace for the days to come. Praying for you all at this very sad time.

Dearest Mark and family,

I am just hearing the news about beautiful Diana and how deeply saddened I am that her vibrant spirit will not longer be with us. While I haven't had the gift of spending time with her in recent days, she will always be a friend and colleague close to my heart. Her vibrancy, intelligence, generosity, humour and remarkable athleticism will forever remain etched in my heart. Her love of the garden and magnificent backyard filled with such beauty will be a vision I shall never forget. I am thus sending much love and light to each of you during this challenging time.

Diana and I started together as faculty at Dalhousie University and she was a wonderful colleague to have. She was dedicated to her students and was always searching for innovative ways to bring information to them.
She was a great walking companion and it was a pleasure to stroll through her garden.
I am so sorry for your loss, Mark, and she will be missed by many others.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Diana. Truely loved by a wide and varied community, she gave of herself to many. Another light goes out in 2016. My deep condolences to her family. The Master Gardener teachers here at Dal are so sorry she's gone.

We always thought of Diana as a second daughter, not a daughter in law. She always treated us with love and kindness and had a great sense of humour. She called Audrey "mum" (the way they pronounce it in Lancashire), and Don "big D".

Whenever we met any of her students they made us feel very proud of Diana's achievements. They were so pleased and grateful for her teaching. Diana put in so much extra effort for them.

Diana always took good care of Mark. She always put people she met and worked with ahead of herself.

We greatly enjoyed our outings to Lawrence beach, Cole Harbour, the downtown Halifax parks, and especially Peggy's Cove, with Diana and Mark. She knew the names of all the flowers and bushes.

Halifax is a better place because of the many gardens Diana designed and planted.

Diana was such a good friend (plus a superb medical advisor). She always made us feel very special and life won't be the same now that she is gone.

Dear Mark
We haven't seen each other for quite some time but I will always remember what a kind person Diana was. Your Uncle Jim and Aunt Bert always enjoyed your notes and visits. Mom always commented how thoughtful it was for you both to remember them.

Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
Treasure your memories.

Diana was a special person who had a great sense of humour and a giving nature. We traveled a few times when we worked together and those trips were full of interesting conversation, laughs and listening to some of the music that she enjoyed (which was different :) Mark, you are a strong man, both of you being through so much, I wish you peace and comfort as you move ahead with your life.
