Donald D. Dixon, Jr., 70, former Lake Charles Chief of Police, died Christmas Day at his residence after a sudden illness.
He was Chief for 17 years until his retirement in 2019.
Don was born in Washington, Missouri and graduated from Dixie Hollins High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. He received a football scholarship to Southern Illinois University and played there until he was injured. He returned to Florida and enrolled at The University of South Florida where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology.
He began his career in the F.B.I. Field Office in Tampa in 1972 and was transferred to the Birmingham Field Office in 1975. Three years later he would be transferred to the New York City Field Office where he would spend the next ten years.
In 1988 then Special Agent Dixon was assigned to the Lake Charles Resident Agency and in 1997 became Senior Resident Agent until his retirement in 2001.
During his career with the F.B.I., Don was a member of the New York F.B.I. SWAT team and Senior Team Leader of the SWAT team for the New Orleans Division of the F.B.I.
Don loved law enforcement and he shared his expertise by teaching law enforcement throughout the world. He was a certified Master Police Instructor in Firearms, Defensive Tactics, SWAT, Street Survival, Counter-Sniper, Police Shootings, Civil Rights, and Interview and Interrogation.
He was also sought out on an International Level as an instructor on Command Post Operations and Violent Crime, teaching on six different occasions at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary.
The F.B.I deployed him to Kenya in 1998 to assist in the Investigation of the American Embassy bombing by Al-Qaeda.
Appointed by then Mayor Randy Roach as Chief of Police in 2002, Don immediately began to use his unique skill set and expertise to increase the size of the police department, establish and train a 19-member designated SWAT team, and created juvenile, sex crimes, and domestic violence divisions. He was also instrumental in creating the Combined Anti-Drug, Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force. He also established the Pastors on Patrol Program which teamed local pastors with patrol officers on regular shifts. Don was also proudly the co-founder of Cops & Jocks, an annual golf tournament and auction the proceeds of which provide scholarships for local law enforcement and McNeese State University athletics. This scholarship will continue in perpetuity.
He was recipient of many awards throughout his law enforcement career, including the 2004 SWLA Bar Association Law Enforcement Officer of the Year, 2004 NAACP Law Enforcement Officer of the Year and the 2017 Recipient of the Patriot of Year for First Responders.
Most recently Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso hired Don as a special project investigator looking into specific cold cases.
The only thing that trumped law enforcement in Don’s life was his family.
He is survived by two sons, Donnie and his husband Ryan Haden and their four children: Finley, Capper, Vienna, and Foster and son Tyler Dixon and his fiancé Zahra. Don is also survived by a sister Lisa Hartmann and her husband Jack, a brother George Dixon and his wife Laurie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, Donald D. Dixon, Sr., and Joyce McClearn Dixon preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at Trinity Baptist Church. The Rev. Steve James, pastor and Chaplain for the Lake Charles Police Department will officiate. Visitation at the church will be from 11:00 AM until time of service.
The Lake Charles Police Department Honor Guard will be Pallbearers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gerard Mack, Dustin Duhon, Braden Duhon, George Dixon, Hall Jones, Graham Hartmann, Ms. Christy Mitchell and Richard Harrell, as well as all the members of the Lake Charles Police Department.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cops & Jocks via PayPal to [email protected] or via check made payable to Cops and Jocks, C/O Alan Heisser, 713 Kirby Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601.

Bigger than life is my best description of (CMF) Chief Don Dixon. To my one time roommate, golf partner, and friend, I love you, miss you, and will never forget the impact you made on me. The world is less safe, and a lot dimmer without you. I can’t believe you’re gone. Rest In Peace brother.

I was Don's supervisor from 1996 to the time of his retirement from the FBI. At the time I took the job I knew Don mainly by reputation. I quickly realized that the Lake Charles Resident Agency was in fine hands with Don at the helm. He had a knack for blending the needs of the citizens of Lake Charles with the mission of the FBI. As the years went by I considered Don to be more of a friend than a colleague or co-worker. I had complete faith and trust in him as an FBI agent and a human being. Don and I had a long phone call about six months ago. We reminisced and looked back on our days working and playing, at times, in Louisiana. I will always treasure the memory of that conversation. I am devastated that Don is no longer with us. However, his legacy will live on in Lake Charles forever.

Don was a great person dedicated to his profession, friends and family. Surely left a void to fill. We’ve been friends for 25 + years and it hard to digest.
