Donald Freedberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2025.
Donald Irving Freedberg, affectionately known as "Donnie," "Don F," or "Donaldo," passed away on May 27, 2025, in Barrington, Illinois, at the age of 71. Born on March 2, 1954, Donnie was a proud North Side Chicagoan whose life was marked by authenticity, resilience, and a deep commitment to community.

The son of Howard and Harriet Freedberg, Donnie grew up in the vibrant neighborhoods of Chicago and graduated from Von Steuben High School before attending college. His early years laid the foundation for a life rich in connection and character. He later spent several treasured years in Las Vegas, Nevada-a chapter he held dear for its sunshine, sense of freedom, and the simple pleasures of sitting outside with a cigar or chatting on the phone with loved ones. Whether in Illinois or Nevada, Donnie found joy in routine and comfort in familiar places. He was known for frequenting his favorite restaurants and embracing the rhythms of daily life with gratitude.

Donnie's passions were as colorful as his personality. A devoted fan of the Grateful Dead and other soul-stirring music, he often played guitar and surrounded himself with melodies that brought him peace. Sundays were for Bears games, and he enjoyed playing the lottery just for fun. He also found deep camaraderie within the cigar community-smoking cigars was more than a pastime; it was a way he connected with others and celebrated life's everyday moments.

Yet perhaps Donnie's most enduring legacy lies in his spiritual journey and decades-long commitment to sobriety. A longtime member of "The Program", Donnie not only maintained his own recovery but also dedicated himself to helping others find their path to healing. Through service work, he offered wisdom, support, and hope to countless individuals navigating their own journeys. His spirituality was central to who he was-guiding him through life's challenges and inspiring those around him.

Donnie had a gift for humor and heartfelt advice. Always ready with a joke or thoughtful insight, he became everyone's favorite uncle, friend, son, and cousin-not because he sought recognition but because he showed up authentically for those around him.

He is survived by his beloved sister Linda Freedberg; his niece Erica Sweeney; and nephews Joel Kodner and Hal Kodner. He was deeply affected by the loss of his niece Rachel Kodner and carried her memory with him always.

In recent years, Donnie returned to the Chicago area where he lived with his niece Erica Sweeney. Their time together and his final months were marked by care, companionship, fierce advocacy and unwavering support-a testament to the deep love within their family.

Donnie will be remembered not only for what he did but for who he was: funny, loyal, spiritual, and generous with both his time and heart. His presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him-and may his legacy of service continue to inspire others on their own journeys. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 9, 2025, from 02:00 to 04:00 PM at Max and Benny's 461 N. Waukegan Road, Northbrook, IL. Guests are invited to tell their own Donnie stories and to discuss their friendships with him. Guests will be ordering off the menu; we kindly request that guests cover their own meal expenses.
