GLASER

Donald (Don) J. Glaser, a longtime leading light of Louisville's interior design community, once dubbed "Secretary of the Interior," by Louisville magazine, and who for decades headed the Stewart's Interior Design Studio, and later served as vice president of residential design for Hubbuch & Co., died Saturday, June 25, 2016, at his Louisville home. He was 91. Mr. Glaser inspired generations of young designers, preaching his "make-the-most-of-what-you-have-where-you-are" design philosophy. One of those protégés, interior designer Beverly Beaver, told Kentucky Homes & Gardens in 2009 that she was inspired by Mr. Glaser's "patience, honesty, and fairness. He set an example to which I have always aspired." His home, long on historic Belgravia Court and later at StoneCrest, felt something like a baroque museum, a repository from his more than 40 years of buying trips circumnavigating the globe. Mr. Glaser, who loved to travel, and who traveled the world as a buyer for Stewart's (and later for Hubbuch's) with an eye for procuring the beautiful and the rare, made friends everywhere: a silk trader in Singapore, a cabinet maker in Milan, antique and art dealers throughout London. From the time he moved to Louisville in 1951, he was deeply involved in the cultural life of his adopted hometown, an active member of the Speed Museum, the Louisville Ballet, Louisville Symphony, Louisville Opera, and the English Speaking Union. In his later years, he devoted himself to Spalding University (where he served as designer-in-residence), and to many longtime clients who, over the decades, had become dear and treasured friends. Mr. Glaser graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 1947, and a few years later, from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Upon graduation, he became a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (A.S.I.D.); he was past president of the society's Southern Ohio - Kentucky Chapter. In 2004, Mr. Glaser was awarded an honorary doctorate from Spalding University. He was also an honorary member of the Kentucky Colonels. He was the beloved son of the late John F. and Lucille Folz Glaser, and the wonderful brother of Barbara Mahany, Nancy Woodhouse (Allan) and David (Carol), wonderful brother-in-law to Fran Greiwe Glaser, a beloved uncle to many nephews and nieces, and beloved friend of Skippy Glaser, Bonnie Coffield, Gene Stotz, Bob and Mary Ann Richardson, Helena Mink, Victor Hurst, Paul Sanders, Ben McQuese, Ed Headley Jr., and Curt Von Allmen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother John, Jr. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Louis Bertrand Church, Louisville, KY at 9:30 a.m. on August 6. In lieu of flowers please send memorials to the institution or charity of your choice. If you wish, acknowledgements can be sent to David W. Glaser at 18 Surry Lane, Freeport, ME 04032.

My mentor, my friend, invited me to Tues. designer's meeting after I had called his secretary and told her that I was independent artist and would like to show them some of my work. When she called me back and said to come on
tues. I called back and asked if I had 5 minutes or and hour, when she said the whole hour I was beside myself and loaded everything I could think of to show, He asked me if I could restore "Chenoisorlree" I replied yes, if you will show me what it is. We got so caught up in what I could do, the store closed and Don, all of the designers and I were in the dark and was shocked to learn that you can not see your hand in front of your face without lights. on. I left that afternoon with my station wagon so loaded with mirrors and things to paint that I remembered thinking, If I had a wreck I had better be killed because I could never replace all of that beautiful stuff. He took me to the first Bellarmine Showhouse on Decatur av. in 1974. Finished my 40th one 2 yrs ago. My kids called him loving their faux dad. When I received my lifetime honorary membership to Bellarmine Women's Council, Don and 7 of my children were at my side, a highlight of my life. Only tonight, one of my sons called and said he met two women who knew Don. I did not know that he had passed. last time I called to chat with him, he was coming home from store and I didn't want to bother him. Just to say hello. My heart is heavy finding this out as I guess I thought Don would be here forever. Last time he called me to chat, he wanted to tell someone that knew what he was talking about, They had painted all of the woodwork black in that first Bellarmine house. Loved that man.

Dearest Don, we were out of town when you passed away. I was shocked today to learn at a Spalding University event that you were no longer with us. As President of the English Speaking Union and as an Adjunct professor at Spalding gave me and my attorney husband Grant Bruton a wonderful, fun, caring relationship with you as a benefactor of many Spalding scholarships and as a member of the board of ESU. We know there is a special place in the history of our lives for such a caring, gentle soul as you are. Peace be with you.

I remember the few wonderful years at Stewarts when I was a young interior designer under Don. I loved his sense of adventure and sense of humor! Specifically, I'll never forget his advice on taking the opportunity to travel: He said, " If the plate of cookies is passed to you, take one, and don't pass it up." Thank you for the talented, generous and warm person that you are Don!

I met Don when he interviewed me for an internship at Stewart's while I was attending UofL. After a few weeks, Don offered me a full time position. I was lucky enough to continue working with him for almost 30 years at Hubbuch & Co. To say that I learned a lot from him is a complete understatement! Don was a kind, generous and creative soul who will be greatly missed.

Don was a kind, generous, thoughtful man and such a gentle soul. We worked together at Hubbuch's and he once hired me to take inventory of his condo contents - what a sight to behold! All of the pictures in my apartment are still exactly as he hung them 19 years ago. His was truly a life well-lived and he will be missed by so many.

Don was always a special friend, from his help on design, to his wonderful Derby Day parties, to our time at events at the English Speaking Union. I was so appreciative of Paul Sanders for introducing me to Don, and I have cherished those memories of him.

Don and I were first cousins from a very large Folz family. I am 30 years younger. My parents, Fred (his uncle) and Theresa Folz (both deceased) were close to him. My memories and relationship grew as I became an adult. Visits to his home in Louisville were special. He was so worldly and full of life. We shared in his adventures vicariously. He was also generous and kind. Gifts to me and my daughter are still cherished. As family members have passed, I am again very saddened by the loss of another from that wonderful generation. So many great memories and miss them all dearly!

I sit on the sofaMomma picked out at Stewart's as she did everything in our houses side by side with Don. I spent my childhood fidgeting in his offices and roaming about the floors watching and learning. Later Much later I would be Don's back door neighbor at 516 Belgravia. Louisville has lost a force of nature and a damn good designer from whom I learned so very much . Say hello to Gerda, you will be so missed.

Don Glaser was a dear friend. He lived on Belgravia Court - my best friend Bill Rous and were neighbors of Don's for several years in the early 80's. He always had nothing but a positive, loving view of the world. Sadly, I have not seen him in many years. He was a kind and gentle man and will be missed greatly by all.

I had the pleasure of working with Don at Stewart's when I was the drapery and upholstery fabric buyer. He taught me so much in the time I was in that position, and I always marveled at his stories and sense of humor. Rest in peace Don.

Thank you for the beautifully written tribute to Don. My mother Joan Uhl worked for him, and it was a favorite time of her career. She and my Dad became lifelong friends with him. He was a wonderful man and I remember him fondly. My sympathy to his family and friends.
