Donald Glover Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 31, 2009.
Donald C. Glover (D.C.) passed away quietly earlier this year in his transplanted home of Mount Dora, Florida, following a year-plus battle with cancer. He packed many amazing journeys and experiences into his nearly eight decades, including travel that took him around the world to many places only dreamt about or described in books. The only son of a coal miner father and mother living in the small town of Brownsville, PA, he left home right after high school to enlist in the Army and ended up stationed in Sacramento, CA. Following his service in the military, he returned to Pennsylvania to start a career in sales and met his future wife (Shirley Carr) while working in Pittsburgh for U.S. Steel. Several transfers, promotions and relocations followed, including Indiana, California and, ultimately, Hawaii where he took a managerial post at Dillingham Corporation in 1964. He would spend the balance of his career with Dillingham, traveling extensively to points throughout the Pacific (Japan, China, Singapore, and Australia) to meet with partners, negotiate contracts, purchase heavy equipment and oversee construction projects. Later, he focused largely in the Middle East (Israel and Pakistan), along with a two-year overseas assignment in Istanbul, Turkey, as he completed his tenure in the role of President of International Construction. His extensive travel and meetings with heads of state even led to an invitation from Congress to share his observations. Despite all of his incredible journeys, he remained a small town boy at heart, fiercely proud of his humble roots and his father's strong work ethic and humility. He was a Mason and a Shriner, as well as longtime member of several construction industry trade associations. He loved all sports, played countless rounds of golf and hunted extensively as a young man in the forests of Pennsylvania with his father, but most of all he cherished the game of baseball. He is dearly missed and survived by his son, Scott Glover of Torrance, California (and granddaughters Lauren and Brittany) and his daughter, Gwen (Glover) White of Danville, California (and granddaughters Olivia and Julia). Donations may be made in his name to Shriners Hospitals for Children via their website at www.shrinershospitals.org, (800)241-GIFT or [email protected].

Donald and I share the same initials as first cousins. I first met him in
2003 as my cousin Karen and I had moved to Florida and were thinking that a Donald Glover in Mt. Dora may be a relative. We called and it was
nice to know we had a cousin we barely knew. We visited and Donald had stories to tell us about my father, his
uncle and Karen's father. Donald was
an interesting and kind person to me. I
hope I can meet his family in the future.

I didn't know Donald as well as I would have liked to, as I was a lot younger than he was. It was a source of great pride in our family to see one of ours go so far in the corporate world.I wish I could have known him better.
