Doretta Toomer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2025.
With profound sorrow and enduring love, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, Doretta Toomer, who departed this life on June 04, 2025, surrounded by the love and prayers of her devoted family.

Doretta Toomer was born in Washington, DC at DC General Hospital on April 3,1958 to the late Lacil Barnett and Mildred E. (Watkins) Barnett, who preceded her in death.

After the death of her mother, Doretta's father relocated Doretta and her siblings to North Carolina to live. After a few years and still very young they returned to Washington, DC.

She grew up in the community of Eastgate in SE Washington, DC. and was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System.

In the late 1970's Doretta met and married the love of her life Daniel Toomer who preceded her in death in March of 2015. From this union they had five amazing children who were raised to always have each other's back.

In the 1980's Doretta and her family of 4 relocated to Dayton, Ohio for her husband's career where their love blossomed into a family of 7. Doretta and Family later returned to Washington, DC in 1992.

Doretta became gainfully employed at George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates where she later retired from. She took pride in providing assistance to patients, their loved ones, and staff members.

In 2023 she was diagnosed with stage 4 endometrial cancer, yet she remained positive, had a very upbeat personality, and never lost her faith in God. Her diagnosis only strengthened her relationship with the Lord.

Doretta's warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Though we grieve her physical absence, we rejoice in knowing she now rests in eternal peace with the Lord.

Doretta was one of 15 siblings, 7 sisters and 7 brothers. Survived by: Hattie Brazile, Permilla Carthon, Patricia Wright, Mildred Barnett, and Malachi Barnett. Preceded in death by: Terether Moore, Margaret Baxter, Sadie McKinney, Lacil Barnett Jr., Barren Barnett, Robert Barnett, Henry Barnett, Theodore Meeks, and Marvin Grier.

Doretta leaves behind her children to cherish her memories. Four daughters, NaTosha, Akosua, Catrina, Sara; and one son, Daniel (Nikia); Eleven successful grandchildren, Dejah Toomer, Erica Toomer, Tyrone Williams, Aaron Toomer, Jalen Williams, Jason Barber, Devin Bowser Jr, Miles Williams, Dyani Toomer, Daniel Toomer Jr ,and Morgan Gray . One amazing great-granddaughter, Riley Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, wonderful friends and church family.

Family,
My deepest heartfelt condolences are with you all during this most challenging time. Doretta was our next door neighbor and friend for many years. We referred to each other as "Cuz". She was such a wonderful person and always found the positive in any situation or circumstance. Such a pleasant spirit. Doretta was a giving person and she did it with a smile. She will truly be missed. However, the fond memories will live on forever in my heart.
The Lord is our Shepherd even when we walk through the darkest valley, He's with us. He will never leave nor forsake us. He is our bridge over troubled waters, our Comforter and our strength when we're weak. He equipped us with everything we would ever need, to face our most difficult times. Sometimes, we just have to dig a little deeper within. Be encouraged. Tawanda "BooBoo" Williams. ..Eastgate!!!!
