Doris HAMMILL Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on May 21, 2013.
Doris Janet Hammill (Thomson)
Doris Janet Hammill passed away suddenly and peacefully at home on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the age of 90 years. She was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the darling of her mother and father, big brother Bob and little brother Jack, all who predeceased her. World War II brought Dave Hammill, a Canadian soldier from Milden, Saskatchewan and Doris together in an Edinburgh dance hall. Dave and Doris wed in the chaos and romance of WWII. She followed her soldier home to Canada traveling with other War Brides by ship to Pier 21 in Halifax, then further by train across the country, eventually arriving in Milden on a sweltering hot day in July wearing her finest wool suit! She was greeted by that tall handsome Canadian. Prairie life followed with the births of their children Jim, Bonnie (Francis) Caouette, Tom (Cindy), Laurie (Lloyd) Larocque. Doris left a legacy of 7 grandchildren; Jay (Melissa), Lisa (Colin), Adam (Katie), Dayna (Freddie), Cody (Roxanne), Spencer (April), Tracy (Steve) and 3 (soon to be 5) great-grandchildren; Jesse, Alicia & Willamena, all dearly loved by their great-grandma. Doris also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews, family members, and friends. She treasured her many friends, the entire community of Milden and all whom she met and befriended since moving to Regina. Doris was a proud member of the Saskatchewan War Brides Association, cherishing the incredible bond and camaraderie that she shared with them. She loved the arts, Frank Sinatra, and bedtime chocolate. Doris traveled far and is now once again with her beloved Dave. A Celebration of Life and Prayers will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in All Saints Anglican Church, 142 Massey Road, Regina, SK. Interment will be held in Milden, SK on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris' name can be made to the South Saskatchewan Cystic Fibrosis Association, Box 721, Regina, SK, F4P 3A8

Dear Cousins and Families.

God gave us a wonderful gift in the life of your Mother and my Godmother. A true Christian Lady who lived what she believed, to love others, to share happy times and sad; an especially sharing her beautiful singing voice with us. We shall all hear her wonderful Scottish voice and laugh in our minds while photos give us her beautiful smile with the twinkling eyes.
Aunt Doris's obituary is really wonderful and we must admit the mention of the tweed suit; brought the memory of her telling us about the fabulous green leather high heels that went with it and it was plus 100 degrees on arrival in Milden. Plus, how she thought that Milden had thrown a huge welcome party for her even with fireworks. Only to be told that it was Dominion Day!!
WHAT A LADY!
Thank you for sharing so generously with all your Mother for she touched so many with her generous heart and her love of life, family and friends.
We pray that God's Peace which passeth all understanding will be in all your hearts and minds in the days and years to come. We know your true love of each other and the precious grandchildren and great grandchildren will always be a living memory of your wonderful loving parents.

Our hearts are sad for you but rejoice Aunt Doris is with God and family that went before her.

Our love and May God Bless You.

Doris, was a wonderful friend. She adored her family immensely - everyone of you held a special place in her heart. As well she welcomed me with open arms from the day I arrived in Milden, Sask to present day. I enjoyed all our visits; little side trips; conversations; etc. I will forever treasure our friendship. hugs to you all

To Family and Friends...

In the days and weeks that follow,
Perhaps you'll often find
That even long-lost memories
Will slip into your mind,
And suddenly your loved one
Won't seem so far from you…
You'll think of touching stories,
The things you used to do,
And favorite family moments
In which you both took part –
These souvenirs of happy times
Will keep you close in heart.

I am so sorry for your loss, she will be remembered by so many as a "DELIGHT"!!
