Doris Tunney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2025.
Doris May Tunney (née Maddy), age 90, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in Fort Myers, Florida. Born on May 14, 1935, in Flat Top, West Virginia, Doris lived a life marked by grace, devotion, and quiet strength.

A proud graduate of Trap Hill High School in Glen Daniel, West Virginia, Class of 1953, Doris began her professional journey with a position at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. She later built a long and successful career as an Insurance Analyst with Equitable in Milford, Connecticut. Her dedication and work ethic were evident throughout her professional life.

Doris was a devoted follower of Jesus whose faith guided every step she took. Her life was a living testament to God's love and grace. She served faithfully at Good Shepherd Methodist Church and found joy in volunteering at the Sabal Springs Clubhouse and wherever else she could lend a helping hand. Her kindness and prayerful heart left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Family was central to Doris's life. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Cathy Ahlschlager and son-in-law Philip; her son Michael Tunney and daughter-in-law Julie; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Though she endured the loss of her beloved husband John Tunney; her parents Carl and Julia Maddy; her daughter Kim; her sister Loretta; and grandson Christian, Doris remained a pillar of strength for those around her.

Doris had a deep affection for animals-especially Pomeranians-and since the early 1980s there was always one by her side. She also found joy in crafting and collecting dolls and Beanie Babies. In a final act of generosity that reflected her lifelong spirit of giving, she donated her entire collection to the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

She loved boating and embraced every opportunity to serve others through volunteer work. Her gentle demeanor, radiant smile, and unwavering kindness made everyone feel seen and cherished. Doris was truly a bright light-her quiet grace captivated hearts and uplifted spirits.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of the United States, Hospice care organizations, or a charity close to your heart.

May Doris's memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire lives rooted in faith, compassion, and love. A Service will be held on July 2, 2025, at 01:00 PM at Good Shepherd Methodist Church 2951 Trail Dairy Cir
