Dorothy Seward Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2011.
Dorothy E. (Johnston) Seward, 88, of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts died peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2011 with loving family by her side at the Pleasant Bay Rehabilitation Center after a battle with cancer.

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1922, the daughter of James Johnston and Emily (Millington) Johnston of Northern Ireland, Dorothy graduated from Brookline High School before the age of 16 and trained in secretarial work at the Bryant and Stratton Business Institute. She worked at the John Hancock insurance company in Boston as secretary to the vice president, and later at the Brookline Health Department as secretary to Commissioner Dr. Alfred L. Frechette. After moving to Cape Cod, Dorothy devoted her time to raising her family. She later worked for the Barnstable Meals-on-Wheels program and then for the Town of Yarmouth Building Department, where she retired at age 78.

In her younger days, she loved to dance to the big bands. She spoke French and German and traveled to France. She enjoyed time at the beach, playing the piano, reading, sewing, and cooking. Dorothy was a devoted Red Sox fan and they won every game that she attended at Fenway Park.

Dorothy leaves behind her loving family, daughter Barbara J. Jenkins of Marstons Mills, the late baby Jean M. Seward, son Robert J. Seward of Malden, grandson Jason C. Boudrot of Marstons Mills, stepdaughter Catherine V. (Arms) Karras, stepson Darin S. Karras, step grandson Christopher S. Karras, step granddaughter Amanda L. Karras all of Harwich, sister-in-law Hampie Johnston, nephew James E. Johnston, niece Pamela, grandniece Samantha all of Pennsylvania, and former husband Joseph C. Seward of Florida. She was predeceased by brother James Johnston and former husband Leonard T. Arms.

Visiting hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 14th, followed immediately by a service starting at 6 p.m. at Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis. The burial will be on Tuesday, March 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Walnut Hills Cemetery, 96 Grove Street, Brookline, Massachusetts.

Barb & Bob,
I have many happy childhood memories of Dottie. She had included me with so many outings, fairs, long hours at the beach, trip to the White Mountains, dinners at your home, sleep overs, making Barbie clothes. She was always kind and loving to me.
Dottie, thank you - I had a feeling on your birthday, it would be our last birthday conversation. God Bless.
Love, Debi
