I first met Whitey when he moved next door to my family in the spring of 1958; he would be playing baseball for the Kansas City Athletics. I was 8 and my brother, Rusty, had just turned 12. Whitey and Mary Lou were great neighbors who would become lifelong friends.
I have many happy childhood memories of the Herzogs´ I will cherish for the rest of my life. I hope Whitey has enjoyed a `whiskey sour´ with my mom and dad in heaven. I send my heartfelt sympathy and much love to the entire Herzog family. One of the good guys gone~never to be forgotten. Rest in peace Whitey.

Don Denkinger passed away last year, but would probably send his condolences. Great Memories! I'm a Mets fan, but those mid-80s Cards teams were tough opponents. Those were good times.

In my opinion arguably the best Manager ever in the MLB although certainly not the most wins. I loved the speed game and his great skill as a strategist. Bless your Soul, Whitey and Blessings to Mary Lou & Family !

It has been an honor getting to know the Herzog family. My favorite thing about Whitey and Mary Lou is, despite how well known they are, they are so down to earth and kind to everyone they meet and know. I also admire their love and dedication to their family! They are so very proud of the family and life they have created-it has been amazing to witness. You will be missed Whitey!

My deepest condolences to MaryLou and family. I am the daughter of Dorothy Lischer Hodapp and the niece of Bobbie, Cletus, and May Lischer. Which I believe makes us family. I know that Whitey spent a lot of time with my Uncle Bobbie by some of the entertaining stories he would tell me. Whitey you were such a good soul and you made us so proud of the accomplishments that you achieved... Thank you..
You will truly be missed...much love

When I heard the news that Whitey had passed away earlier this week I was shocked and in disbelief. Whitey and MaryLou ( and family ) were good friends here in Kansas City with our family and we had SO MANY good memories. When Whitey was named manager of the KC Royals in the mid 70's I was starting high school and the other students found out that I knew Whitey well and I was given the nickname " Whitey " which I thought was awesome. Still to this day most friends call me Whitey. Such a baseball genius and great storyteller. I could listen to Whitey all day. I'm a local Social Worker in the KC Area and Whitey would always sign items for charities without hesitation. SO GLAD I was able to see him and MaryLou while I was in St Louis last summer. We had such a good visit. Whitey was the BEST, truly the Best. My deepest sympathies to MaryLou, Debbie, David and Jim.

My dad and Whitey were high school basketball competitors, as dad graduated from nearby Marissa HS in 1950. Years later mom and dad enjoyed going on several Cardinals cruises with Whitey et al in the off season. I never met Whitey myself, but I'll never forget his witty comeback when asked at a press conference about Vince Coleman's status after Vince had been caught underneath the slow moving field tarp; "...there's nothing wrong with him that a good swift kick in the butt wouldn't cure!"

Have many memories of Whitey throughout the years, growing up in New Athens, hitchhiking to the Sportsman's Park, etc...My thoughts are with Mary Lou and family. Your old friend, Maurice Petri

I had the pleasure of running the Whitey Herzog Youth Foundation for the last 20+ years and interacting with Whitey on a daily basis for much of that time. We raised money to assist youth baseball programs in the Missouri and Illinois areas. Whitey was passionate about enabling kids that wanted to play baseball to have adequate facilities in which to play. He loved kids and drew much satisfaction from our success. Our success was directly related to Whitey's integrity and close relationships with his players and many other sports celebrities. Everyone loved him. He gave much of his time back to supporting many other charities as well. Whitey and Mary Lou truly felt like another set of parents to me. I have shared so many wonderful memories over the years with them. Not enough ink for all the funny Whitey stories - but suffice it to say that my life was enriched by having the experience of spending so many years helping him with his Foundation. All my love to Mary Lou and the family.

Recently returning from Cardinal fantasy camp, Whitey and I were going through the TSA in Fort Lauderdale Florida. I had TSA pre-check but why he did not so I got to the TSA and I went through the pre-. You know that why he had a cane, not just any cane but one shaped like a baseball bat that was specially made for him. I come around the corner of TSA and the guard is there holding white baseball bat cane. This TSA security person informed us. Mr. Herzog was unable to take his cane on the plane because they don´t allow baseball bats during flights. So I returned through to TSA and had to check our baseball bat cane for the first time in all our travels together. He just laughed his ... off. We´ve been blessed to be friends with the Herzog´s for over 40 years. Whitey will be missed and I will think about him often in fact, playing golf Monday I thought of the time at Whitmoor. He told me he was going to skip the ball over the lake and landed on the green and guess what he did rest in peace my friend you had a well lived life.

We all know Whitey "The Baseball Genius" but he was also a good family man and a great friend to me personally! He was actually a great friend and mentor to all his ballplayers. He was always a straight shooter; he never sugarcoated anything and always told you the truth (whether you liked it or not Haha). I had some success in my Major League career but when someone asks me what was the highlight of my career; my answer is: "I got to play for the best manager in Major League Baseball for 3 seasons.....I played for Whitey Herzog!!!!!! I could share a few fun stories but I´ll save those for private conversation at his Celebration of Life in May!
* God Bless Mary Lou Herzog and the entire Herzog family - and to Whitey´s entire baseball family.......we all loved him and they´ll never be another one like him; he will be missed!!!!!!!!
* Rest in Peace Whitey!!!
P.S. I can´t help but picture seeing ole´ Casey, Red, Stan, Jack, and others greeting Whitey up in Heaven and they´re all getting caught up over a card game with a few cold pops!!!!

A special time I shared with my Father in Law was the morning of June 21, 1987. It was Sunday, it was Father's day, it was game day. But at 6:15am we were in the Bass Tracker, on the water at Herb Fox's strip mine lake just like family and friends have been before. However today, Sports Illustrated was on the lake too. Whitey kept saying, "They keep taking pictures, and making all that noise. We ain't catching nothing." They even fell in getting in to their chase boat. Herb had to drive the boat!
We had our liver sausage sandwiches and chased em with a beer. Caught six keepers, I got a bucket of water, Whitey fileted them, put them in a carton, pulled the boat out of the lake and drove home. The whole way back it was quiet. Happy Father's day, it was a great Father's day!
Thank you Whitey, and may God bless you and hold you. Amen

Hey Relly, You have impressed me since you grabbed that rope and swung out into the Kaskaskia river. You have made us all proud in many ways with your family and baseball accomplishments. The Lord blessed us all by having you in our family. God Bless Cousin Lynn

One of the many lessons I learned from my father is the importance of being honest with people. When I was a teenager he was the Director of Player development for the New York Mets. His job was training and assessing young minor league players and sometimes that entailed releasing them from their baseball contracts. It always hurt my heart. But he taught me it is disrespectful and uncaring to patronize people and not giving your honest opinion. This lesson served me well as an educator. In his later years, sometimes I had to be honest with him and he didn´t always like it. But he knew that I loved and respected him enough to tell him the truth. I miss you Dad so much! Love, Your "bossy " daughter Debbie
