I was fortunate to have had Doug as an art student at Poughkeepsie Middle School and then at Poughkeepsie High School. Doug loved making art and was always a bright spot in my day. Doug truly was one of the sweetest, kindest souls...He always had a kind word to say about everyone, was always trying to help other students with their work and always tried to help classmates who were feeling sad or angry: he had a unique understanding and compassion for all. Every now and then, Doug would text me and we would talk for a bit and he would catch me up on what he was doing. I hadn't heard from him in a while....always thinking there is time. My heart aches.
Several years ago, Doug gave me one of the best gifts I ever received in the 30 years of teaching in Poughkeepsie. At a PHS Awards evening, the AP spoke about finding one adult that you could trust and be your 'go to person': the one you knew would hear you. I didn't know Doug was there that night. After the presentations were over, Doug came running up to me and told me thank you, that I had been that person for him and still was and that he would always love me. I will never forget his words or the big hug and smile he gave me. He told me not to cry, I told him they were gratitude tears because what he said was such a gift: those were words that I will always, always remember.
Doug will always have a special place in my heart: I will remember his smile and gentle soul, always and I will miss his texts telling me hi, I was thinking about you, mama b. I am so very, very, very sad for all of you. I will miss him. Heaven is a better place.
