Rodriguez

Poughkeepsie - Douglas Michael Rodriguez was one of the most beautiful souls that will ever exist in this world. He was loving, carefree, non-judgmental, and one of the most affectionate individuals we have ever known. He was truly a beacon of light for all that knew him, the sunshine in a sea of darkness.

Doug brightened the world on April 5, 1991, and from that moment on, he touched every soul he encountered.

Douglas is survived by his mother, Dorothy; father, James; biological father, John; siblings: Jonathan, Christina, Nicholas, and Elizabeth; half-brothers, Nicholas, Thomas, and Christopher; his partner, Robert; grandparents; many aunts and uncles; cousins; the rest of his loving family; and his friends who became family.

Douglas was a 2010 graduate of Poughkeepsie High School. He went on to become a certified PCA, in order to help those less fortunate. He was very proud of his career.

Doug left us on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. We take comfort in knowing that he has been welcomed by our Heavenly Father and other loved ones who were gone too soon.

Calling hours will be from 10am to 4pm and from 6 to 9pm on Wednesday, September 13th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., 4365 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY 12538 (845-229-2624).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Michael Morris at 10am on Thursday, Sept. 14th at Regina Coeli Church, 2 Harvey Street, Hyde Park, NY 12538.

Burial will follow in Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 US Route 9, Fishkill, NY 12524.

I was fortunate to have had Doug as an art student at Poughkeepsie Middle School and then at Poughkeepsie High School. Doug loved making art and was always a bright spot in my day. Doug truly was one of the sweetest, kindest souls...He always had a kind word to say about everyone, was always trying to help other students with their work and always tried to help classmates who were feeling sad or angry: he had a unique understanding and compassion for all. Every now and then, Doug would text me and we would talk for a bit and he would catch me up on what he was doing. I hadn't heard from him in a while....always thinking there is time. My heart aches.
Several years ago, Doug gave me one of the best gifts I ever received in the 30 years of teaching in Poughkeepsie. At a PHS Awards evening, the AP spoke about finding one adult that you could trust and be your 'go to person': the one you knew would hear you. I didn't know Doug was there that night. After the presentations were over, Doug came running up to me and told me thank you, that I had been that person for him and still was and that he would always love me. I will never forget his words or the big hug and smile he gave me. He told me not to cry, I told him they were gratitude tears because what he said was such a gift: those were words that I will always, always remember.
Doug will always have a special place in my heart: I will remember his smile and gentle soul, always and I will miss his texts telling me hi, I was thinking about you, mama b. I am so very, very, very sad for all of you. I will miss him. Heaven is a better place.
