Douglas Wood Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2025.
Douglas William Wood of Cannon Beach, Oregon, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 86. Doug leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his family and service to his community.

Born on July 24, 1938, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, to William G.D. and Florence Mable (Peart) Wood, Doug enjoyed a happy childhood in Oshawa and Regina. One of the first in his family to go to college, Doug attended the University of Toronto, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He also met, and in 1963 married, Judith Ann (Hewitson) Wood. Upon graduation, Doug and Judy embarked on their new life in the US.

Doug began his engineering career with Chrysler, settling in the Detroit area and enjoying many years there. He later found a long fulfilling professional home at Jessup Engineering in Rochester Hills, Michigan, working alongside friends he admired and respected. A man of tireless energy and practical skills, Doug approached every project with determination - whether building a family room addition, restoring vintage cars, welding, woodworking, or capturing the world through his camera. If someone needed help with a project, Doug was the one to call.

Doug and Judy raised their daughters, Leslie and Laura, in the Hickory Heights neighborhood of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where they cultivated deep and lasting friendships. After retirement, they moved to Cannon Beach, Oregon, to be close to their grandsons, Will and Henry. Doug continued his tradition of service in his new community, volunteering at the library, serving on the Union Health District board, participating in local government, and faithfully serving as an elder at Cannon Beach Community Church.

Doug is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith Ann Wood of Cannon Beach; daughters Leslie Wood Garvin (Wes) and Laura Wood Lacey (Sasha); grandsons William Kyle Garvin and Henry Douglas Garvin; and sister Wendy Evelyn Brown of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Thomas James Wood of Victoria, B.C., Canada.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2:00 pm, at Cannon Beach Community Church, 132 East Washington Street, Cannon Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cannon Beach Community Church or Cannon Beach Library
