DR. AL ?THE BISHOP? HOBBS?A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Already a budding Gospel Entrepreneur, Al Hobbs came to WTLC radio station to
purchase airtime for a gospel concert he was promoting. He requested of the station?s management that he be allowed to cut his own commercial. They said, ?Yes?, and he cut his first commercial spot. Over the next few weeks the spots rang-out over the airwaves of WTLC and sold many a listener on attending the concert. During the spot?s run, Al?s distinctive voice came to the hearing of then general manager, Tom Mathis, and when Al come into the station to pay his bill, Mathis offered him the position of gospel announcer. During this time Al worked as general manager of a local 7 to 11 Supermarket and his
work schedule would not allow him the freedom of working the time schedule to become the station?s gospel announcer and he had to decline the position.
A few weeks later, Tom Mathis phoned Al and offered him a salesman position that had just become available, they met and Al took the job. Shortly afterwards, Tom asked Al if he would take over the reigns of gospel announcer, and he eagerly accepted the challenge.

Thus began Al?s career as a gospel announcer. With an immediate positive
response from TL?s gospel audience, Tom Mathis announced, ?That?s my man? He?s my Jesus freak?my Bishop of the Airwaves! Hence, Al ?The Bishop? Hobbs was born. For over two decades, Al ?The Bishop? Hobbs has been a major contributor to the improvement of quality of life in our city. Letter of Condolence - For the Family of
Dr. Alfonzo "The Bishop" Hobbs

RUSSELL DELEGATION
Wilmington, Delaware

Our hearts were saddened by the passing of our co-laborer and Levite; AL HOBBS; but we know that this Earth is not our home and to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Certainly Al has left a dynamic legacy to his family, friends, and supporters not only in Indiana but nationally and worldwide.

We will always remember his grace and posture, quick wit, amazing voice and his incredible personality. We were so blessed to first meet him as a moderator for the Bobby Jones Youth Explosion 1992; Nashville where he skillfully taught us how to “Sleep with Dignity” while in session. We would go on to fellowship with him within the Gospel Music Workshop of America and the Gospel Announcers Guild. His leadership and spirit of equality for all groups and artists whether professional or independent was extraordinary.

Al' s passing marks the loss of a founding Pillar of what we know as modern gospel. We are grateful to have walked and shared paths with this great man of music and communications. To his children Alex, Asha & Bridgett, The Hobbs, and GMWA - GAG Families; know that we love you and will be praying with you in the weeks and days ahead. Truly the world has lost a gospel beacon. Continue to Wait on the Lord knowing that he is an Almighty God!

Much Love and Peace

I met Al "The Bishop Hobbs" during the GMWA convention held in Philadelphia, Pa, in the late 60's. He and his wife were the sweet couple, always helpful and approachable. His wife led the young people's Liturgical Dance group. Their personalities and exuberance in the Gospel Music Field will forever be remembered. Rest well Al Hobbs we celebrate you and will never forget you. Condolences to His children and family.
