Dr. Jessica Mullinix Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 23 to Mar. 24, 2023.
Dr. Jessica Miller Mullinix, 35, died Wednesday, March 22, after a long battle with breast cancer.

She had practiced as an obstetrician/gynecologist at Candler Hospital in Savannah for four years, building a loyal following of patients, colleagues and co-workers. She died in her home, with her loving husband Dr. Patrick C. Mullinix at her side, along with her parents, brother and mother-in-law.

She was born on July 26, 1987, in Augusta, GA., and attended public schools, was graduated in 2005 from Davidson Fine Arts High School where she was president of the Math Club and Science Club; a member of the Student Council; treasurer of the Spanish Club; and a member of the National Honor Society and math honor society. During that time also she was a member of the Social Ballroom Dance Club, Cotillion Club, Augusta Junior Rowing Club and was a competitive equestrian.

She was graduated Magna Cum Laude Honors from the University of Georgia in 2009, and Mercer University School of Medicine in 2014. She completed her residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA in 2018 before joining the staff at Candler and where she was the first OB/GYN to serve the Pooler Area at the St. Jospeh/Candler Pooler Campus.

She met her future husband as a classmate at Mercer University School of Medicine's Savannah campus. They were married Oct. 24, 2015, in a riverside ceremony on the Sapelo River in Shellman Bluff, GA before making their home in Norfolk, VA. There, she completed her residency as he completed his military obligation as a flight surgeon in the US Navy. They then moved to The Landings in Savannah where she began her career at Candler Hospital and he began his residency in radiology at Memorial Hospital.

Jessica continued to work full-time at Candler throughout her first two treatments for breast cancer but was forced to end her practice in November after learning her cancer had metastasized. During her residency and four years at Candler, she delivered more than a thousand babies.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Patrick C. Mullinix; parents Julian and Judy Miller, of Savannah; brother Jordan Miller of Charleston, SC., uncles, Martin Miller (Laura Lynn) of Shellman Bluff and Savannah, GA.; Jerry Latimer (Joyce), of Carrollton, GA.; and David Latimer, of Carrollton, GA.; her aunt, Ellen Goldberg (Arnold J.) of Shellman Bluff, GA.; cousins, Jana Feiler (Preston), of Savannah; Stacy Silverstein (Jay) of New Orleans; John Latimer (Elisabeth ), Gary Latimer and Jerry "JJ" Latimer Jr. (Kim) and Kent (Shawn) Megorden, all of Carrollton; Jason Latimer (Daniella) of Santa Monica, CA; Kay Staten (Ed) of Crestview, FL; and Kathy Corey (Rob) of Readfield, ME.; and her loving canine companions Sage and Hatch, who remained at her side daily.

Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Fox And Weeks Funeral Directors at 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive. The funeral will follow at 4 p.m., conducted by Jessica's cousin, John Latimer, who also officiated at her wedding. Burial will be Sunday at 10 a.m. in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Contributions can be made to The Living Vine Christian Maternity Home in Savannah, which Jessica supported.

I am so sorry for your loss. I only met Dr. Mullinix once, but she was such a warm, kind, wonderful person. Only tonight did I see the announcement. I am so sorry for your loss. She was an extraordinary woman.

I am absolutely heartbroken over the loss of Dr. Mullinix. She delivered both of my children, and was always there with a listening ear and supportive shoulder (and quick joke to calm my anxiety). She wouldn´t tell me what I wanted to hear, but would tell me what I needed to hear, which I found invaluable. She would reassure me that I wasn´t crazy, and indulge all of our questions with brutally honest, thoughtful answers. Our appointments, and even both deliveries, were filled with laughter and her encouraging words ("you got this", "you are so strong, you can do it", "I´m right here", "it´ll be fine, I promise"). It is unfair that she worked so hard and brought so much life to the world, literally and figuratively, to only have hers be so short. I told her often how much I appreciated her, and I know everyone she worked with and helped felt the same. She has made a huge impact on our lives, and we are only a fraction of the lives she has changed. I´m lucky to have known her, even luckier to have had been under her care, and luckiest for having her there to bring my two kids into the world. It´s a better place now because she was here.
