Duane Hagadone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 30 to May 2, 2021.
Duane Burl Hagadone

Duane Burl Hagadone was born in Coeur d'Alene in 1932 to Burl and Beverly Hagadone. He spent his life investing in project after project in his beloved hometown. Those most notably included the Hagadone News Network, The Coeur d'Alene Resort, The Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, Hagadone Marine Group and a number of restaurants and other properties, most of them beside Lake Coeur d'Alene. It was a place he dearly cherished.

Mr. Hagadone died peacefully at his Palm Desert winter home April 24, 2021, at the age of 88.

In 2004, Hagadone was honored with the Horatio Alger Award by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans. The award recognizes "outstanding Americans who exemplify dedication, purpose, and perseverance in their personal and professional lives who have often achieved success in the face of adversity."

Often quietly, Duane and Lola Hagadone have been major contributors to charity. There are few causes in Coeur d'Alene which have not benefited from his generosity. Their $2 million gift helped make the Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County a reality.

He is survived by his wife, Lola; his children Brad and wife Teresa and Todd and partner Adam; his stepchildren Dennis Spurlock and wife Lynn and Paige Leifer and husband Steve; his grandchildren Taj Hagadone and wife Kandis; his great-grandchildren Trace Hagadone and Koraline Hagadone; his step-grandchildren, Morgan Leifer, Bo Leifer, Reilly Spurlock, Madison Spurlock, Teena Frank (deceased) and son Jaxon Frank, Shaila Macioseck and children Peyton Graham and Bo Macioseck; his sisters Kay Wellman and husband Roy and Joan Kellner and husband David; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held for the immediate family.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boys & Girls Club of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

First of all, our deepest sympathy to his family. We had the honor of meeting Duane when his then Golf Pro Mike DeLong called us regarding Mr. Hagadone's Red Geraniums were having disease problems. We traveled to Idaho from Denver, Colorado to take a look at the issue. Following a program that we gave his grounds crew to follow and correct. We ended up shipping him 4 Semi-trucks of his favorite red Geranium called "Sincerely Yours". We did this for many years until we sold our greenhouse. Dan also went to his home in Coeur d'Alene to correct and clean up his gardens. We only met this gentleman a couple of times, however, each time was an experience that we will cherish.

Thank you Mr. Hagadone for my first job after returning from Vietnam. I learned from the small corporate office.

Quite simply, Duane Hagadone changed my life. Without him, I would not be the man I am today. Raised in Spokane, Washington, Brad Hagadone was one of my best friends. In August 1972, I was almost 19. Done with high school, I was about to head back out on the road, enjoying the life of a wannabe Rock Star...cheap hotels, gear I didn’t own and gigs that didn’t pay, all likely to culminate in a future that would never pay the rent. Then the phone rang. Duane Hagadone was asking me for a favor! My friend Brad would be heading off to The College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA. Duane declared me to be the most responsible and levelheaded of Brad’s crew, and he’d appreciate it if I went along with his son to campus, ensuring Brad made it through school in one piece. Not only was Duane Hagadone calling me, he called me responsible! What’s more, he pulled a kid with no connections or future out of a dead end life, and paid for my schooling! Being shown that level of trust changed my life in many ways. Today my wife and I are the proud parents of six, with fifteen grandchildren. The retail flooring store I opened in 1986 is celebrating its 35th year. I’m still a wannabe Rock Star, and while I may have been the most levelheaded of Brad’s friends at the time, I’ll keep the stories of our many California adventures to myself. See Duane?!? I’m STILL protecting Brad’s good name. Im forever grateful. You changed my life, and I’ve never, ever forgotten it. -David Schultze

Mike Clayton and I had the opportunity to visit with Mr. Hagadone at his home in Big Horn. The subject of the afternoon meeting was property taxes. However, for me, it revealed so much more. It was obvious that Mr. Hagadone loved art ,and even more, loved his family---- especially Mrs. Hagadone. He was known to be very generous to the community. In fact, when Mike and I were there, they were getting the home ready to host a fundraiser for the medical center. Duane Hagadone was a blessing to our community. He was truly a giant who will be missed .

His generosity towards The Vintage Club kicked off the auction to award scholarships the employees and their children. Offering the Lady Lola as a live auction brought a generous bid at the Club.
