Duncan Brodie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2020.
'To Live in Hearts we Leave Behind is Not to Die' - Thomas Campbell It is with a very heavy heart that we announce that our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Duncan Alexander Brodie, peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 10th. After battling pancreatic cancer for 3 years, he died in his home in Michigan surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the 'lovely' Lois, his daughters Paige (Rob), Maia (Matt) and Quinn (Peter), as well as his 9 grandchildren, Kale, Mason, Greer, Honor, Grayson, Kellen, Emmett, Maeve and Fiona. His sisters, Christine & Marilyn predeceased him, and he leaves behind his loving sister, Eleanor, and all their loving families. The Brodie family is just one small fraction of the countless lives he touched. Duncan lived a life well beyond the numerical measure of 85 years. The success and love he provided for his family are immeasurable; however, we can't help but list a few of them even though his stories were much better heard than told. Duncan was born in Oshawa. He attended O.C.V.I. and won the Canadian School Boy Curling Championship with his team in 1953. He played hockey with the Oshawa Generals, Galt Black Hawks and Whitby Dunlops. He graduated from University of Toronto in 1959 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his time there he was recruited to both the hockey and football teams, which he told us was worthwhile because he was given free meals! Anyone who knew him knew that he was an athlete like no other. He was drafted to both the CFL (Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and NHL (the Boston Bruins); however, he turned both down to pursue his career at General Motors and his life with Lois. During his time at GM he rose to senior executive positions in Oshawa and Detroit. You'd never hear him brag, so we can do that for him. His three daughters were raised with endless compassion and an instilled confidence that they could do anything they set their minds to. They will remember him for his strength of character, his warmth and never ending love. In more recent years he enjoyed his European bike trips with his family, his time in Marco Island, Florida, golfing, tearing up the tennis and pickleball courts, giving sincere advice to his grandchildren, consuming licorice allsorts and milkshakes at an alarming rate, and teaching all of us how to take a 'gut check'. The lessons he taught and the unconditional love and support he always gave to his family and friends cannot be accurately articulated. His work ethic, sarcasm and infectious smile were unmatched. Duncan will be forever missed by his family, friends, and all those who were lucky enough to be the target of his signature wry but always playful humour. We will all continue working to make him proud. A private family celebration will be held next summer in Muskoka. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in his memory (www.pancan.org).

Dear Lois and family. While we had only a brief time with Duncan we were both so touched by him. Reading his obituary we realise that he was as much to us as his large life to all.
While aware of the immense lose you all are feeling he has left an amazing legacy. For this you are truly blessed.
Knowing him was to feel worthy of a great kindred spirit. We are grateful for our short time to call him friend.
Sincerely

Will miss you old friend! You befriended me, the “yank” when I first moved to Oshawa in1966. Had a hell a time “prying” you out of Engineering to work with. Ed Higgins in truck sales. You were on your way. Many emails
& phone calls over the years, kept in touch. ###family I-am still going .strong at 95 -Cedarbrook of Rochester.

In my career at General Motors I am certain Dunc was the best human being I worked for through those 32 years. Yes, he was the boss, but he was a guiding mentor, almost like you were part of his extended family. Dunc was always dressed sharply and cared about people and listened intently when folks addressed him. His passing is an ache but having known him as a mentor and friend, is a blessing in my life. To his family, you were always #1. Sincere sympathy to you all in this time of loss.

Dunc was one of my favorite bosses in 40 years at GM. I could always walk into his office and be greeted warmly knowing that my input and opinions would be respected and considered. He was fair and genuine and will be greatly missed. RIP, Dunc.

Dunc was one of my favorite bosses of all time at GM! Even when I technically didn't report directly to him, I could walk into his office and always be greeted warmly and with respect. My opinion and knowledge and that of others mattered to him. He was approachable and appreciated your efforts. He will be greatly missed. RIP, Dunc.

Worked with Dunc in Engineering for many years starting in1959. Great guy, good friend. He was "completed" by the "Lovely-Lois" who he often referred to as "the Captain". A true pleasure to have Known Dunc. Condolences to Lois and family.

Many memories of this wonderful family. As a teenager, I babysat the girls and enjoyed the interactions with Duncan and Lois and particularly with the girls. I met Bobby Hull when he came to the Brodie home to pick keys for a new car. LOTS OF PEACE SENT TO ALL.

You would meet him and years later he would still remember your name. A truly incredible man.

I first met Dunc when I was playing Juvenile hockey in Oshawa. He would come out to our practices and gives us tips on how to play. He was very generous with his time. Was always supportive. A talented athlete in all sports. Later on I had the pleasure of playing hockey with Dunc in the GM Salaried hockey league. What a treat to play with him! Always friendly and very personable. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to Dunc's family. Rest in Peace Dunc.

Dunc was a friend, my coach in junior football with the Imps or Hawkeyes and an adversary for many years in the GM Salary Hockey League. Dunc was a man I respected in many different ways. It was on a General Motors trip to Bermuda in 1974 that I first met Lois and quickly learned that she was a great tennis player and a wonderful woman. My deepest sympathies to Lois and family.

To the Brodie family - the Annand family were saddened to hear about your dad's passing. We have fond memories of him during your time in the Maxwell Heights neighbourhood.

Please take care and know that we're thinking of you and remembering your dad.

Grateful our paths crossed on Marco Island. Duncan’s playful sense of humor on the tennis court will be missed. Wishing the whole family peace.

I have fond memories of Dunc when I was kid working at the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club. He was so kind and respectful of me and my brothers. I watched him do hand standing pushups. He held my brother, Jerry, by the ankles upside down over the edge of the 18th hole bridge.
He brought Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe to play golf. He coached the Hawkeyes and help my brother Gary with weight training.
Another time I helped him get his golf club stuck in the 50 foot elm tree on the 17th hole.
Both Dunc and his wife were kind and gracious to us all.
Thinking of the Brodie family.
