Erin, I was so sad to hear about your Dad's passing. I know how much he meant to you - I always knew that you were a "Daddy's girl"! You are in my thoughts often. I hope you are happy and successful. If you are ever in Rosebud stop by the cafe to see us. You are still missed dearly! Sue (and Bill) Sturrock

To my Aunt Cynthia and family, I may not have been there over the years but my heart is sad over this. I cry when no one is watching and grieve silently. This is a hard thing to come to terms with. I say my prayers and ask for God to guide us through this. I will miss my uncle, no doubt about that. Love Always, "Misna"

Dear Cynthia and to all the Monhollen and Salinas families:
I send my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you all at this difficult time. I had the pleasure of meeting Ed on a few visits to San Antonio and he always made me feel like I was family with ever visit. Ed was the kind of person that you will never forget and/or could never be replaced. I feel so blessed that I had a chance to be in the company of such a wonderful, funny and loving man. If I had only recorded his laugh! It will always be in my memory, forever. Love and prayers to you at this time of sorrow. Love, Kathy Artz, Melrose, MA

I remember "Ol Big Ed", (by big, I mean big in heart and soul) when I think back to those days, in the early eighties where we first met at Ft. Hood Texas, Big Ed as a Captain and me, a Chief Warrant Officer. We were both assigned to the 6th ACCB (Air Cavalry Combat Brigade, "HEAVY CAV") as Pilots. During the day we flew attack helicopters (and some very, very scary nights under Night Vision Goggles), then partied hardy on Friday nights at the O club!. Wow, what great memories. We played hard and worked even harder. Ed, you were a real Mestengo (up through the ranks), greatly admired and a respected leader.
Later, as mutual admiration built between us and our families, we all became good friends.
Through thick and thin, off duty and on, we prevailed as only "Heavy Cav" can. First in Texas and later in Alabama and even later at Sikorsky Aircraft (as Aircraft Accident Investigators) in Connecticut. We worked together as a team, surviving all odds and in good spirits.
Remember "Gary Owen" Big Ed!
Until next we meet at the pearlies!
Forever, your Bud, Love ya man!

Our family moved directly across the street from the Monhollen family in February, 1954. I didn't realize it at the time, but I was about to meet someone who whould become my friend for the next fifty seven years. I wish I could remember how we met and what we did that first day but I can't, too many years have passed by. I can only guess that we both were outside on a cold winter day that February. From that day forward, we were almost inseperable. The two of us would do everything together. There wasn't a day that went by until we left high school that we at least talked. The Monhollen phone number is still implanted in my brain. From eight year old adolescents through our teenage years, we had our adventures and misadventures. There were the times of tears and sadness. There were times we were down and blue. It was then we needed each other the most. Two little boys and later two teenagers knowing how to comfort each other. The friendship we had was truly rare and uncommon. I could run on for pages relating the stories and escapades we shared together while growing up but it would take up too much space. I will say we talked about almost everything. We wondered what kind of career we would have, would we get married, would we have our own kids? Just how would our lives unfold? There were plenty of things to wonder about and that's what we did. For us, those were our wonder years. One thing was for certain - we both were uncertain what lay ahead in the future.
After high school, Eddie started college and I went in the military. We left the wonder years behind and entered reality. Time passed. I didn't see Eddie again until he came home on convalescence leave after crashing in Viet Nam. He was wearing an almost full body cast because of the injuries. He was happy to be home and we took full advantage of it. Because of the cast, it was difficult getting him up and downstairs as well as in and out of cars. Once we got to where we were going, as long as he had a carbonated beverage nearby, he was fine. Soon after we again went our separate ways. Every few years we would reunite and carry on like time wasn't fractured in regards to our friendship. Every summer since 2009, Eddie would come back to Toledo for a few months. We had to opportunity to see each other quite often then. It was so nice to have him back. My wife, Sharon, and I had the chance to visit Cynthia and Eddie at the end of summer 2009. What a fantastic time we all had. Cynthia and Eddie were the perfect hosts. The morning before we left, Cynthia made the most spectacular breakfast I ever had! I thanked Eddie because he was the supervisor in the kitchen.
Eddie was in Toledo last summer. He had been back only a few weeks when he informed me he wasn't feeling that well. I told him that in a few weeks he'd be better and we'd play golf. Although we never got the chance to golf, we did have the opportunity to go out to dinner twice with Cynthia and Eddie before they had to go to Houston. I knew then that Eddie was pretty sick. Always trying to be and optimist, I thought once Eddie got back home to San Antonio, everything would be okay. We would be able to see each other again the following summer. I just didn't realize how ill he was. I blame myself for not knowing what I should have known. Eddie played an important role in my life. He was the star among the cast of characters in my life. Eddie, you will be thought of constantly and missed dearly. Every thought will be cherished - your laugh will be heard and a twinkle in your eye will be seen.
To Cynthia, the Monhollen's and all the family and friends whose lives have been touched by Eddie: Sharon and I offer our deepest condolences. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you.

I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of my old golfin and drinkin buddy Ed (Gonzo) Monhollen. As a fellow Air Cavalryman of the 7-17th Attack Helicopter Squadron, Gonzo took a newly rated Lieutenant and helped mold him into an Aero Scout. The memory of his laugh, his smile, his humor and his humanity will stay with me always. Gonzo, I know you are at Fiddler's Green, where all good and honorable Cavalrymen go, sharing a laugh and great war stories with those who have preceeded you. Save me a seat at the table, buddy. My sincerest condolences go to you, Cynthia, and all the family members who are suffering this loss. Love, Stewart Wyland (Beeker), COL, US Army Aviation (Ret)

One of the luckiest things that ever happened to Val and me was to move in next door to Ed and Cyn in Enterprise, AL in 1986! We were so very lucky to become such wonderful friends of Ed and Cyn. Ed, I will miss your friendship and infectious laugh! You taught me so much about humility! The obituary is spot on - I have never laughed so hard as when either Ed or I would Duff a Shot on the golf course...Many tears were shed in laughter as we would race out of bounds to "foot wedge" it back in before anyone would see - but we were only playing each other. Now, many a tear is shed in your honor, Ed. Forever in my memories - I will miss you, Ed! My thoughts, prayers and condolences are with Cyn and all of his loved ones who have all been touched by him! May you 1 putt every green in Heaven, Ed!
So many years ago!

I also flew with Ed in Viet Nam. We were both in the same platoon and I remember his crash. We did not have many crashes while I was there so Ed's crash was a big deal at the time. We were all so glade to hear that he made it through. My condolences to the family as another brother moves on to a better place.

Ed was a fellow Blue Star and as such has a large extended family of brothers and sisters who will keep his memory alive in our hearts and in our stories! We all walked in the footsteps of those who came before us, taught us and challenged us to keep the code of that brotherhood, to be willing to stand beside each other and to accept whatever fate may come as a result of that decision.... nothing is guaranteed except that honor will be honored, and so we do, and so we always will!
