Eileen KIEL Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jul. 15, 2014.
KIEL, Eileen
Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the Angus McGugan Pavilion of Capital Care Norwood in Edmonton, Alberta. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 66 years, Herbert Kiel, her daughter and son, Lori Kiel (Mark Hughes) and Darwin Kiel (Aine Plant), her grandchildren Aislinn, Alexander and Aidan, her brother-in-law, Larry Kiel, her nephews Brian and Bruce Howie and their families, and her many friends and acquaintances who were fortunate enough to have known her smile and the twinkle in her eye.
Eileen was born on January 28, 1929, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Alexander and Agnes Howie. In April of 1948 she married Herb, and several years later they purchased their home on 130 Street where they lived for over 60 years. Eileen's open- door policy meant that all the neighbourhood kids hung out at the Kiels' because it was a fun place to be - lots of fresh baking, a sprinkler in the yard and gallons of Kool-Aid!
In 1990 Eileen suffered a stroke that left her paralysed and unable to speak. With hard work she recovered some mobility and a few words, and over time became a remarkable communicator - able to share her ideas, emotions and caring attitude without having to say a word. Eileen and Herb remained active, enjoying regular family events in Edmonton and frequent trips to Vancouver to visit family. During this time Eileen split her time between her home in west Edmonton and the Angus McGugan Pavilion where the dedicated staff supported her with care and friendship for over 20 years. Eileen's cheerful nature and easygoing personality were recognized by everyone who met her. She brightened many lives with her ready smile and easy laugh. She will be missed deeply by everyone who knew her.
A Celebration of Eileen's Life will be held in mid-September in Edmonton. All Eileen's many friends and acquaintances are invited to attend to share stories and memories of a special woman and a special life.

I was so saddened today hearing that Eileen, a woman who holds such a special place in my heart, has passed on.

I was very privileged having the Kiels as neighbours while growing up. I have wonderful memories of the countless times our families shared together - right out of “Leave It To Beaver”! Herb and dad never tired of pushing us kids around the block in homemade go-carts, setting up tents in the backyard for sleepovers, filling the wading pools or flooding our garden to skate. All the while, Eileen was busy orchestrating goodies and surprises that so beautifully complimented these events. She was always there smiling, more often than not chuckling, while thoroughly savouring these moments together.

Eileen never got mad, or maybe we were just perfect children, as I can never recall her loosing her temper or scolding any of us. The Kiel house was indeed the place to hang out! Eileen was a wonderful mother, a devoted wife, an exceptional neighbour and a real treasure to know. That twinkle in her eye will sorely be missed, but she will forever live on in our memories. I was truly blessed having her in my life while growing up in Westmont.

My warm thoughts are with you Herb, Darwin, Lori and families, as you confront the huge loss of Eileen's passing. She touched the lives and hearts of many while on this earth and with that, lives on.

With love and fond remembrance,

July 15, 2014

Herb: I am sorry to learn of your loss. Eileen had such a wonderful smile which could light up a room. Your devotion to her since she suffered a bad stroke speaks well of your wonderful marriage. Dick O,Connor
