Elaine Kalatta Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 4, 2023.
Elaine Kalatta, 76, of Shelby Township, MI, passed away on October 12, 2023. She was born on February 11, 1947, and was the youngest of three daughters in a Greek household. Elaine defied societal expectations and became the first of her siblings to attend and graduate from college. She dedicated her life to helping others and never expected anything in return.

With her master's degree in psychology, Elaine was the go-to person when friends or family members needed guidance. She cared deeply for her parents and ensured they always had what they needed. Elaine had a close bond with her sisters, and though there were arguments, love always prevailed. She looked out for her nieces and nephews and their families, always dropping by to say hi and bringing them toys or snacks.

Elaine's caring nature extended beyond her immediate family. She was thoughtful of others and would often bring candy to her doctor's offices, credit union, and other places she frequented. Every Christmas, she made care packages for a local nursing home, filled with tissue, chapstick, lotion, and candies. Elaine never went anywhere empty-handed.

Nature, books, and crossword puzzles brought Elaine joy. She loved to get in her car and go on spontaneous trips, often heading north to sit under her favorite tree and reflect on life. She had a deep appreciation for the simple things in life and enjoyed writing poetry as a young adult. Music was also a passion of hers. Elaine was known as the fun aunt, known for her kind-heartedness, love, and generosity.

Elaine is survived by her nephews and nieces: George Horattas (Jeff Galloway), Constance Horattas, Debbie Horattas (Tina), Nicholas Horattas (Kristin), Caroline Wekwert (Leonard), and Elizabeth Baldassarro (Mario). Her great-niece and nephews are Alexis, Anthony, Niko, and Benjamin. She also leaves behind many cousins, friends, and caregivers.

She is predeceased by her parents, Kallis and Constance Kalatta, her sister Goldie Horattas, brother-in-law Andreas Horattas, and sister Stella Fronimos.

Elaine had a fulfilling career working for the State of Michigan with troubled children in juvenile homes for 30 years. She made a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of children, teaching them how to manage their emotions and behavior using the principles she acquired through her own education. After retiring from the state, Elaine continued to work for another 10 years at the Macomb Intermediate School District, where she dedicated her time to children and adults with autism.

A prayer service and inurnment will be held at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Township, MI, on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 10:30 am. Elaine will be laid to rest in the family plot alongside her beloved sisters, Goldie and Stella; after 25 years the three sisters are reunited.

Elaine Kalatta will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. Her selflessness, kindness, and dedication to helping others will forever be remembered. May your memory be eternal.

Oh, my, what an unbelievable family, their kindness and unique customs will always be one of my favorite lifetime nights. This is where I met Elaine, a unique person who became one of my favorite ladies! You better believe it; she was a Godsend to Caroline for many years. Sent with Love, always The Wekwerts', Leo and Gale.

Ms. Elaine would always make me laugh when she would at playing games on her computer, we would have such a great time, and also when she would the taster at dinner, she would always give me a thumb or down if it needed something, I will never forget her for that.
