Williams, Eric Sean, MD, FACC, FHRS
a cardiac electrophysiologist at Mercy Clinic Heart and Vascular, passed away on October 15, 2020. He was 44.
Eric was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He attended the prestigious Stuyvesant High School, and then matriculated at Cornell University, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Applied and Engineering Physics. He graduated with honors from Harvard Medical School in 2004. An avid traveler, he spent two years conducting medical research and learning Spanish in Costa Rica during his time in medical school. He then trained at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) for his residency in internal medicine, serving an additional year as chief resident before moving to Duke University for his Cardiology fellowship and then University of Washington, Seattle, for his electrophysiology fellowship. Having more than 16 years of diverse experiences, especially in cardiology, he was a physician with an impeccable record and a deep commitment to every one of his patients. His family is proud of the work that he did and the countless hearts that he saved and touched.
A member of the Association of Black Cardiologists, Eric was devoted to helping and educating younger physicians. One of his good friends extols him best, 'As one of the very few Black electrophysiologists in the country, he was an inspiration to the next generation of aspiring young Black doctors across America.'
Eric was a big thinker, personally and professionally. He loved history, current affairs, and reading biographies. In addition to being a committed practicing physician, he published multiple influential articles that informed research, policy, and practice in patient care. Fluent in Spanish, he taught his daughter to read hundreds of books in both Spanish and English before she reached the age of six. He also served many Spanish-speaking patients. While respectful of the past, Eric always kept his eye toward the future. He loved learning. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a master's degree in bioinformatics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Eric's wife, Hedy, was his perfect match, his salsa dance partner. While he was quiet and calm, she was bold and expressive. He was so proud of Hedy's work in sociology and would enthusiastically share her research with friends and colleagues. He admired her intellect and her strength. He adored their daughter Zora; he loved taking her to the library, park, zoo, symphony, ballet, exploring the city, and anywhere she wanted to go. Eric was a percussionist in high school and was inspired by John Coltrane. He and Zora shared a love of music, spending many hours listening to music and singing together. She was the light of his life and the center of his world.
Eric is survived by his wife, Hedwig Eugenie Lee; his daughter, Zora Hart Williams; his mother, Joyce Travis Williams; and his sister, Allison Dawn Williams. He was predeceased by his father, Morris Bruce Williams, in 2019. He will be missed by many.

Facebook offered me an old photo from my stay at Summer School in Cambridge, England in 1998. I look at the photo and remember Eric Williams, whom I met there and whom we saw later when I was studying in the US and when I returned to the Czech Republic. He visited me in Seattle, I visited him twice in New York, and he also took me to visit Boston at Harvard, where he studied medicine. I was also visiting his family in Brooklyn and we wrote for a long time. Then he moved, got married and lived in Costa Rica, then he was a doctor in Seattle, San Francisco and many other places, but we lost touch because his harvard email stopped working and i did not have any other. He was a very busy as a doctor, a cardiologist, he was still in education and did not use any social media and the writing of letters somehow did not lasted.
Today - when I saw this photo, I googled his name and found out that he died during covid period. It is a shock and sad news for me. He was a wonderful person and a wonderful empathetic doctor. Such a shame. I feel sad.

On Saturdays I loved seeing Zora and her dad, Eric, stop by the University City Public Library for our weekly chats ever since Zora was just a baby. Eric was tall and when he would hold her near his face they looked just alike to me....so much so I started calling her "Minnie" as in "Minnie Me". When she started talking she would then say "Minnie" when she saw me. It was hilarious. I will miss those weekly chats with Eric greatly, but I am sure I will continue them with Zora and mom, Hedy. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Just from the few minutes I got to see him at a time, it struck me that Dr. Williams was an amazing human being.

I was so sorry and shocked to just hear of Dr. Williams´s passing, by letter 12/15/20 received from Mercy. He was my Cardiologist as a matter of fact, he implanted a loop recorder in me- and it´s still in!! He was such a kind and caring man, I´m really going to miss him. He reminded me so much of my only child- my 59 year old son!! My prayers and condolences to the family and May Doc R.I. P.

We just learned of Dr. Williams´ passing from his office at Mercy Heart Hospital; we had an appointment coming up with him this month. Could not believe what we were told; such a young man, so kind and brilliant with such a warm personality. Our path crossed as accompany my mother to see her physician. The new Electropysiologist at the Heart hospital. Impressively he spoke. Introduced himself as Dr. E. Williams studied, and research in other hospital communities out of state.
Here it is" finally thinking , a brother handling his business combining physic science to find better ways treating the hearts aFib conditions measuring/viewing matters of motions, and behaviors of the heart. .....Wow! Is all I could say....then my mother said I told ya he's good. Never thougt I would see the day my mother appreciatedany medical physician. DR. WILLIAMS made my mother feel comfortable...his bed side manners where politful every visit. Even times I were not able to attend . He would ask " where's your daughter, how is she etc etc.
Several occassion a conversation would start. Rather my mother asking bout his family , or me asking how's his daughter expressing her self in St. LOUIS . HE would speak on how its a lot of free stuff our state offers. How he were fine tuning her in the Arts to have a better view on life.
Then one day our conversation included famous artist singer I spoke of Nina simmon. He drove deep in and pulled out Coltrane, John.....ok what bout Charlie Parker or Ella Fitzgerald. Dr. Williams look are round with that huge smile of his " saying you know Parker" I replied yes and other cats like him. But you must feel them on wax. Records Lps / 45. Which I know you have being a music lover.
He spoke of his profound love for family. His sister he said reminds him of champagne very tastful, bubbly....easy to enjoy.
His aura showcase a rainbow of colors at any giving time. It was always a great pleasure to have be surrounded by his presence. Awesome!
Ole saying " stop to smell the Roses" you never know what conversation will strike up, or what person will impact your life even if just for a little while.
Our condolence to the Williams Family, thanks for sharing your Husband, father, son, brother with so many people over his life time much appreciated.
