Eugene Hacker, Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2025.
Eugene Richard Hacker Sr., age 88, of Waretown, NJ, was called home to God on August 13, 2025.

Born on November 4, 1936, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Gene lived a life marked by dedication-to his country, his work, and most of all, to his family.

Gene proudly served in the United States Air Force for eight years. During his service, he was stationed in Germany for 38 months following the Cold War. His time overseas was marked by courage and commitment; he returned home a decorated soldier, recognized for holding down hostile grounds during a critical period in global history.

After completing his military service, Gene partnered with his in-laws, Nick and Mary Capone in a pizzeria and a milk delivery business, before beginning a career as an over-the-road truck driver. His work ethic and reliability were hallmarks of his professional life. Even after retiring from long-haul trucking, Gene continued to stay active by working for a courier delivery service until the age of 81-a testament to his enduring energy and sense of purpose.

A man of routine and simplicity, Gene found joy in the everyday moments of life. He had a gift for conversation and was always more interested in hearing about others than speaking about himself. With a quick wit and an ever-ready quip or joke, he brought smiles to those around him. He enjoyed working with his hands and had the patience to fix just about anything-including the cars of many a friend, back in the day. He was also a loyal member of the Moose Club for forty plus years.

Nature held a special place in his heart-he lovingly tended to his yard and garden, maintained his large fish aquarium with care, and faithfully fed the birds outside his home for decades.

Above all else, Gene's life centered around family. His priorities were always aligned with their needs.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Capone-Hacker; son, Eugene "Gene" Richard Hacker, Jr.; parents, Andrew L. Hacker, Sr. and Mabel Hawke-Hacker; brother, John F. Hacker; granddaughter-in-law, Brooklyn Amsterdam-Hacker, and his best friend Paul C. "Chris" Torrell.

He is survived by his son, Keith N. Hacker; daughters, Kelly Mancini and Valerie Hambly; daughter-in law, Jo-Ann Hacker; grandchildren, Eugene III (Jessica), Jason, Christopher (Megan), Nicole (Damon), Eva, Joseph, Ally, Kara, Quinton, and Michael; great-grandchildren, Cora, Rylan, and Ella. Additionally, Gene will be so greatly missed by the wildlife in his yard who became accustomed to his daily care.

Also surviving are brother, Andrew Hacker, Jr., and sister Marion Racey.

Gene's legacy lives on through the lives he touched. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.

A Visitation-10:30 AM to 11:00AM followed by Funeral Mass-11:00 AM to 12:00 PM will be held on August 27, 2025 at ST MARY OF THE PINES PARISH; 100 Bishop Ln., Manahawkin, NJ 08050.

A private burial for Gene will take place at a later time with his immediate family.

August 20, 2025

In writing this, I can only call him "Dad" because that's always what he expected from the dear friends of his children. We were all part of the Hacker family. A fine and caring man whose love and family devotion is a legacy that he leaves for his children, grandchildren, and everyone whose lives were better for knowing him.

The D'Ambrosio family extends their condolences and love.
