(1950-2012)
With deep sadness we announce the passing of Eva Deri, pediatrician, world traveler, music lover and bridge silver life master, on March 26th, 2012. Beloved wife of Tom. Adoring mother to Catherine (Matt Armstrong) and Jillian. Devoted Nagyi to Maddie and Ellie. We express deep-felt gratitude to the nurses and physicians in 5 East at the Ottawa General Hospital. The Funeral Service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa, on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 2 p.m., followed by interment at the Jewish Memorial Gardens, 6549 Herberts Corners Road, Osgoode, and Shiva at the Deri home at 28 Apache Cres. Shiva will also be held later on Wednesday, March 28th and Thursday, March 29th from 7-9 p.m., with the service at 7:15 p.m. No flowers please. Those wishing may make a donation in Eva's name to CHEO or to a cancer charity. May God bless you and keep you.

Dr. Deri is often remembered when we look at our daughter's baby pictures where Dr Deri was her first Dr. She was kind and professional and genuinely caring dr. We missed her.

I condolences to Dr. Deri's family and friends. She has been taking care of my brother and myself every since we were little, and her gentle smile and caring approach always made us feel at ease, and happy 'to go see the doctor'. While I did not know her on a personal level, the glimpses of her personally that were revealed through her profession say a lot about how an amazing person she is.

Dr. Deri has been my pediatrician for the first 18 years of my life. I will never forget her kindness, and how she truly cared for her patients. I am very thankful for everything she did for my family, and will miss her very much.
The medical community has lost a star, and her family an exceptional human being.

So sad to learn of Dr. Deri's passing. She was my 2 children's pediatrician many years ago, from their birth until we moved from Ottawa 1979 - 87. We will always hold very fond memories of her- our thoughts and prayers to the family.

After reading all of the lovely messages in this book, there is not much left to say. Eva was a wonderful person and a knowledgeable, caring and compasionate physician. It is quite amazing to see how many lives she touched, how many children she cared for so ably, and how widely loved and respected she was. She was also highly admired in the Ottawa medical community. We should all be so fortunate to have a legacy like that. My wife, children and I will miss her very much.

Although I had heard that Dr. Deri was ill, I learned only this week of her passing. She was pediatrician to my two children from babyhood until they "aged out," and she was so wonderful with them. I will always remember her smile and her warm voice saying, "You have beautiful, perfect children." What a special woman, and what a loss to her family and the larger community. Our sincere condolences.

When we recently learned that Dr. Deri had passed away, my children and I spent time thinking about the things that made her special...how she always gave them their tongue depressor after an exam, how she always spoke to the children directly and made them comfortable, how she always smiled and was calm and kind. I only found out last week that Dr. Deri had passed away. It was with great sadness that my family received the news. She has taken care of "my five babies" over the last 23 years...and was truly an extremely caring and wonderful woman! I just learned the sad news. My deepest condolences to dr. Deri's family, friends and colleagues. Dr. Deri was truly an amazing person. The devotion, compassion and care she showed her patients was remarkable. I will never forget how she cared for me when I was sick. She was dedicated and always brought a smile to my face during my stay at cheo. Twelve years later when I was at the General for the birth of my son she recognized me by name and offered to be my son's pediatrician. I knew how busy she was but she insisted she would make the time. She was then an excellent pediatrician to my son. Always smiling and always caring. She will not be forgotten. My deepest sympathies. I was saddened to realize about Dr. Deri's passing earlier this week. My family's heartfelt condolences to Dr. Deri's family in losing a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and to the Smyth Pediatric clinic on losing an excellent doctor and beloved colleague. When I first read the message at Smyth Pediatric last summer and learned of the battle she was fighting. I was shocked. Dr. Deri, although not our own pediatrician, often stepped in to be our doctor when the children's own pediatrician, Dr. Adams was away or unavailable. Over the course of twenty years and nine children later, so many, many times she was the calm voice of capable reassurance. No matter what child was doing what her warm smile and true love of little people was always present. I always came away from those visits feeling that although my children had not for whatever reason been able to see their own doctor, his colleague Dr. Deri had treated the children as though they were her primary patients and we were part of her family. Always so interested in each child and how they were doing. God has a special place for those who devote their lives to children and I know that Dr. Deri is there. Both Dr. Deri's family and Smyth Pediatric are our thoughts and prayers in these sad moments. Dr.Deri looked after our 2 sons for many years and made going to the doctors fun! She would always say to them, there are my redhead boys! She made them feel so special and I will never forget her kindness.
I also work at Cheo and she would always ask me how were her favorite redhead boys? no matter how busy she was.

I met Dr. Deri 21 years ago at the Ottawa Riverside hospital. She was there taking care of all her babies and for my son who was born with the cord wrapped around his neck. She took care of him from the moment of his birth for the next 181/2 years seeing us at least 4x/month for his first few years and then at least 2x/month for the remainder of the time. I was an older mom at 34 and I was terrified of doing the wrong thing especially since he is an only child. Dr. Deri treated us - Irshaad and his parents - with kindness and respect and is/was one of the smartest doctors I have been blessed to meet. Doctors like her are a kindness and a mercy and she will always have a place in our hearts. I remember when I gave my son a Human Body book at 5 and he insisted one morning soon after that he was having a stroke and had to see Dr. Deri so I didn't send him to school and off we went to her office. I remember he and I standing in her office chastened as she scolded me for giving a child a body book and reassuring him that it was virtually impossible for him to have stroke at his age and she not know about it and that in the future stroke or no stroke he is not to skip school! She was more than family - each time I look at him I think of her lovingly. And should he realize his ambition to be a doctor then one of the reasons is because she was a strong role-model in his life - she was amazingly patient with my many, many visits. May God be kind and gentle and merciful towards her. May her grave be warm and spacious and comfortable and well-lit. And May she enter His Blessed Garden and be among those with whom He is well-pleased.

From the moment she met our boy Adam just hours after his birth, her grace and humour was evident as she offered "If you don't want to keep him, I'll be happy to take him!". I'm sure she said this to lots of parents, but she continued to make the offer until Adam was sixteen. Our sincere condolences to the Deri family. We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Deri 6 years ago, the day our son was born and continued our relationship through her practice at the Smyth clinic. She was kind and caring and always took the time to listen to our concerns and offer advice. She called our son her special little Hungarian man. She was always delighted to see him and made him feel like he was her favourite patient, greeting him with a big smile. He actually looked forward to his visits to Dr. Deri.
There are a select few that have that special gift to really connect with their patients, and Dr. Deri had it in Spades.
She will be truly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this very sad time. May the knowledge that she touched so many lives, help guide you through this difficult time.

Almost 15 years ago we first met Dr Deri when my son was born. Not having parents myself I looked to Dr Deri many times for advice and reassurance for our children Adam and Emily. Even when it was trivial I knew we were receiving the best medical care and in the most kind, respectful and compassionate way. Our children were "gorgeous" to Dr Deri and they always left her office feeling a special pride about themselves. Dr Deri was a gift to our family and we feel blessed to have known her.

We had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Deri the night our son was born. I meet two wonderful people that night in 1998. Dr. Deri was always so kind and happy to see her patients, treating each one like her favorite, my son smiled every time she said how gorgeous he was. She would always tell them how gorgeous they were and that she was going to take them home with her, which sent them into a fit of giggles. Her compassion and genuine kindness calmed me many times when I worried about my children's health, even when I worried over something as trivial as a cold!

Dear Tom, Kati and Jilli,
Tony and I are so sad to hear of Eva's death, what a tragic loss for your family. Tom, you and Eva made me feel like part of your family when I came from England in 1976 to be Kati and Jilli's Nanny. I've never forgotten how hard Eva found it to leave the children when she went to work, and how she would rush in at the end of the day, full of love and smiles for them. Very sorry for your loss. Dr. Deri was the pediatrician for my 2 children born in the 80's and was a very knowledgeable, kind, caring and compassionate doctor. She was a very special doctor and person and left an imprint on all those that knew her. The world is definitely a better place because of all the great work that she did - I feel blessed to have had her as my childrens doctor.

Dear Tom, Cathy and Jill, I am so saddened to see the obituary for Eva today. I have never forgotten how welcome you all made me, a recent immigrant from Scotland, when I was “Kati and Jilli's” live-in caregiver in 1978 and 1979, and how you opened your house up to me and my friends . Your always treated me as a friend rather than an employee and though I haven't been in touch with for many years I have many fond memories of the time I spent with you. My condolences to the Deri Family. Dr Deri was always there to fill in for Dr Adams for all my kids from the time they were born and took such good care of them as if they were her own. She was also so nice to talk to whenever we brought our children in and would always say hello to us. She was indeed a very kind hearted soul.
