On Friday, March 15, 2013 at The Willows of Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont, PA, while resolutely striving to manage her cognitive losses with independence and dignity. Mrs. Goldberg passed peacefully in the early morning hours. She was laid to rest on March 17, 2013, at a private graveside ceremony at the Temple Sinai Memorial Park. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Goldberg was born in Chicago on September 1, 1921. She attended the University of Illinois where she met and became smitten with her husband-to-be, Alex Goldberg. They were married 69 years before he predeceased her just two years ago in March, 2011. They lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, returned to Chicago and ultimately settled in Pittsburgh in 1959 where Evelyn was actively involved in many community service and Jewish organizations. After many years of volunteerism, she went to work with Just Petites for 10 years catering to petite women like herself. She brought much energy and smart salesmanship to the store and was respected and well-liked. Evelyn was a wonderful and loyal friend to all who knew her. She was an avid bridge player and took great pride in teaching her grandson Jake the art of playing gin rummy. Her only real regret was that her beloved family was scattered and missed being together as she happily reminisced about "the old days". Her love and devotion as a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother permeated her home with pictures of all those she adored. Evelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alex Goldberg. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Stein and husband Bernie; grandchildren, Jeffrey Stein, his wife Aviva and Lauren Stein Goldman, her husband Andy; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Ella and Lexi Stein. She was deeply loved and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at Temple Sinai in Squirrel Hill at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 17, 2013.
