Athens - Freddie V. Massey, 87, of Athens, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024.

A native of Athens, Mr. Massey was the son of the late H. Dwight Massey and Wilmer Ree Massey. Freddie was preceded in death by his wife, Kay Frances Massey; and brother, Dempsey Massey.

In the late 1950s, Freddie and his father founded Massey's Used Cars, which was in continuous operation at its location on the Danielsville Highway in Athens for more than 60 years until Freddie decided to retire from the automobile business following his 85th birthday. During his career in the automobile business, Freddie was elected president of the Georgia Independent Automobile Association and appointed to state advisory boards regulating automobile businesses.

Freddie enjoyed fellowship with other outdoorsmen as a member of the Fresh Sign Club during annual hunting and fishing trips. Freddie also enjoyed building vintage racecars and participating in vintage car racing as an owner. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include sons, Vonne Massey and wife, Mendi, of Athens, Todd Massey, MD and wife, Beth, of Philadelphia, PA, and Kirk Massey of Athens; sister, May Ree Tarkenton; and grandchildren, Josh Massey, Rachael Massey, and Mary Frances Massey.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m., at Gordon's Chapel Methodist Church, 6625 Nowhere Rd., Hull, GA 30646, with Pastor Andy Hargrove and Pastor Bill Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery in a private family ceremony.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 2, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made to Athens Academy, 1281 Spartan Lane, Athens, GA 30606 or Gordon's Chapel Methodist Church, 6625 Nowhere Rd., Hull, GA 30646.
