Frederick Monschein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2022.
Frederick L. Monschein, 89, of Oveido, FL, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2022.

Fred was born on December 30, 1932, to Leland M. Monschein and ???Helen M. Monschein in Indianapolis, IN. He attended Howe High School in Indianapolis and enjoyed competing for the cross-country team while there. After graduating from high school, Fred enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He later owned OEM Fasteners with his brother Bob, was the Warren Township, IN Tax Assessor and then had his own property tax consulting firm, Fred Monschein & Associates.

A principal theme to his life revolved around his affection for our country and his interest in politics. He was a proud patriot and a staunch Republican. This passion led him to pursue a political career. He was elected to numerous terms as the Warren Township Tax Assessor in Indianapolis, IN from 1966-1990. This also propelled him to run for a U.S. Congress seat in Indiana in 1980. In addition to his own career in politics, he assisted in local elections in Indiana, as well as national elections during his retirement in Florida. A character trait that suited him well in these endeavors was his ability to easily banter with others. He loved to hold court with a table full of people sharing cocktails, jokes, and stories.

Fred enjoyed traveling, especially in the US. He visited every state in the US, except for Idaho. Besides exploring areas stateside, he liked traveling by boat. He not only traveled to the Caribbean on ships of various size, but personally was at the helm of his own vessel many other times. He treasured time on his sailboat, whether it was weekends spent on Lake Monroe near Bloomington, IN during his working years or in the Gulf of Mexico in his retirement. He enjoyed numerous hours with family and friends sailing his boat, Blarney, especially when involved in regattas between Key West and Naples, FL.

Fred was a talented woodworker. He demonstrated his skills in this area to both his family and the public. He made many pieces of small furniture, a small rowboat, and other intricate items for his family to enjoy. His talents were also on display with the public, where he helped with sets and props for local theater productions at The Naples Players community theater group. He was also a very talented boat modeler, where he received numerous awards and recognition with the Naples Modelers.

Fred was recently predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Sara Monschein, in September 2021. Before this, he was predeceased by his father, Leland Monschein, his mother, Helen Monschein, his brothers, Robert Monschein and Damon Monschein, and his daughter Carol (Monschein) Mahlouji. He is survived by his children, Debbie Annello, Terri Monschein, Mike Monschein, Erica (Brian) Kmak and Jeff (Diana) Gantz; grandchildren, Brian Annello, Bijan (Amy) Mahlouji, Tosha Smith, Chasity (Chris) Boatman, Chelsea Monschein, Mikey Kmak, Gracie Kmak, Josh Gantz, and Jackie Gantz; and five great-grandchildren.

A brief service for immediate family will be held at the Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, Greenwood, IN on Saturday, September 3, followed by a private burial service at the Greenwood Cemetery.

A Celebration of Life will be held later that day. Please contact Jeff Gantz at 317-577-9000 for details regarding the Celebration of Life.
