G. Rodney JOHNSON Rod was born 8/1/1928 in Seattle and passed peacefully 12/20/2009 in Bellevue. He attended Laurelhurst Elementary, graduated Roosevelt HS, class of 1946. Rod graduated from the University of Washington in 1950, where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and varsity crew. Also in 1950, he married Joyce Berglund, who became his loving partner for 59 years. He and Joyce were charter members of First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue, where he sang in the choir for over 50 years. Rod was a well-respected general contractor throughout his career. Rowing was a significant part of Rod's life and he was inducted into UW Hall of Fame in 2000. In 1992 he became a member of Masters Rowing Association and the Ancient Mariners Rowing Club, which allowed him to compete and make friends around the world for the next 19 years, most recently in Vienna in September of this year. His love of people, music, art, friends and family made Rod a treasure to all who knew him. He leaves his wife, Joyce; sons Clark (Janet) of Campbell, CA and Stu (Patsi) of Sammamish, and daughter Katy Hawley (Tom) of North Bend. Grandchildren Cherstin, Erica, Krista, Brianne, Tricia, Ian, Nathan, Annalise, Maddie, Anna and Kimberly; Two great-grandchildren, Reidar and Anika. I was blessed to sing in the FPCB Chancel Choir with Rod for 15 years. I had open heart surgery last summer, and he was always so kind to me about this shared experience, speaking of it with good humor and encouragment. He will be greatly missed!

I had the honor a pleasure of singing in the First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir with Rod. His passion for God, music, rowing, UW, and his wife & family were always present. I will especially miss his smile, kindness and humor. God bless.

I will greatly miss seeing Rod at the Pocock Center. No matter the weather, Rod and Bill Cameron would show up to row their double and their pair rowing shells. I was inspired by his athletic ability, excellent humor, and relentless competative fire. My condolences to Rod's family.

I had the good fortune, along with many other Los Gatos Rowing
Club masters, to row with Rod and his long time rowing partner, Bill, in many FISA regattas. He was a role model for all of us. I speak for all of us in wishing his family our condolences.

I was a substitute rower for the Ancient Mariners back in the 90s. Rod's expertise as a rower and his terrific sense of humour helped to make the experience one of my most cherished. My best wishes and prayers to his family.
