Gary DaSilva Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2009.
NANTUCKET — Gary Michael DaSilva, 52, of Nantucket, lost his heroic battle against lung cancer on July 12, 2009, at Mashpee Care and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his family.

Born on Nantucket in 1956, Gary attended Nantucket public schools where he was a gifted athlete. The dream of pursuing his athletic career would soon become unattainable as the result of a tragic automobile accident at just 16 years of age. Fortunate to survive, Gary then aspired to a career in the trades, working in his family's construction business. This again would prove difficult for him as a result of the brain injury he suffered as a result of the auto accident.

In his early 30s, he discovered a new passion, one that would introduce him to his second family. For 20 years, Gary was an avid golfer at Miacomet Golf Club. He developed many amazing and lifelong friendships. The automobile accident left Gary with what some might describe as a "quirky" personality. It could only be appreciated and valued by those who truly knew and loved him.

Being a genuine friend of Gary's meant always knowing exactly where you stood. There were no shades of gray with Gary, simply black or white. He will be missed by such an array of people, family, friends, golfers, and of course the fast food industry of Nantucket.

Gary is survived by his parents, Ronald and Elizabeth DaSilva of Mashpee; brother, Glenn and wife Paige DaSilva of Salisbury, Conn.; sister, Terri Lynn Lavallee of Cotuit; grandmother, Beatrice Leger of Nantucket; nieces, Jodilynne and Mary Elizabeth; nephews, Christopher, Gregory, Ronald and Mason; lifelong friend of 25 years, Penny Snow and the "Apple of his eye," his great-niece, Morgan Elizabeth.

A wake will be held at the Lewis Funeral Home on Nantucket on Wednesday, July 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church Our Lady of the Isle, on Nantucket Thursday, July 16, at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nantucket Boys and Girls Club.
