Our sweet and kind, husband, dad, brother passed away fighting but peaceful in the early morning hours on Thursday, August 20, 2015. His family is overwhelmed with grief. Gary was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer on November 20, 2014. He wanted so much to get well enough to be one of the first to enter a clinical trial at Robert Preston Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. He traveled there many times with his family for visits just to be told in June 2015 his tumor had shrunk and swelling was reduced. This horrific disease began to regrow in early August 2015. Gary loved his family with all his heart and soul. He couldn’t wait for the weekend so he could have all his family over to grill out, swim, go boating, fish, watch the games or to just talk & laugh. Talking & storytelling were just a few of his attributes. His stories were many & we know he has a captive audience in heaven above. Gary started his carpet & rug business at a very young age in a small warehouse in 1982, off Westshore Blvd. in Tampa, Fl. He then moved to Drew Park before Tampa International Airport bought the land. In 1996, he started a design district, on Willow Ave. He converted a 1920’s Bldg. into what has become Decorative Arts Center of Florida, which houses design businesses including his, Addison/Dicus Co., which specializes in high end rugs, carpets & wood. The company grew & expanded to Orlando, Fl. He traveled to India & Nepal in search of rugs many times over the years, just as recently as Oct. 2014. Gary knew the story about how each rug was woven, dyed & hung to dry. He was born in Columbus, Ga. May 20, 1950. His family moved to Tampa when he was six yrs. old. He went to Manhattan Elem., Madison Jr. High, & graduated from HB Plant High School in 1968. He continued his education & graduated from Mercer Univ. in 1972. After traveling to Colorado & installing carpet he started his rug career in Atlanta, Ga. There, he worked for Vol T. Blacknoll Co., where he developed his talent & curiosity about the industry and moved back to Tampa. He met Debbie, his wife, while calling on customers & the sparks quickly began. It was at their first dinner date in 1976, at the Valencia Gardens, that they were a couple. Gary and Debbie married in 1978, and lived a life full of traveling, raising their children, buying and restoring homes and enjoying their mountain home in North Carolina. He was proud to be a DaddyO to his two granddaughters. Gary took full pleasure in golfing with his friends. He was known to be a true southern gentleman. Gary was predeceased by Aubrey Dicus, Sr. He is survived by his mother Jimmie, his sister Carol Dicus Burt, & brother Aubrey Dicus, Jr. He is also survived by his loving wife, Debbie Lord Dicus, & children, Allison Dicus Thompson (Nathan), & grandbabies, Emerson & Addison, his son, Drew Addison Dicus, & daughter Hillary Nicole Dicus (Ben Suarez) & many nieces and nephews. We would like to thank all who were such good friends to our husband & father, and especially those who pitched in to make his life so much happier these last nine months. Gary would always call in the afternoon & say to Debbie, “What’s the plan”? He would end the call with, “see you in a bit”. We’ll see you in a little bit Gary. Your family will keep you in our hearts forever. Donations can be made in Gary’s memory to Hyde Park United Methodist Church, Tampa, Fl. Services to be held at Hyde Park United Methodist Church at 3:30 P.M., Friday, August 28, 2015. Arrangements handled by Blount and Curry Funeral Home, 605 South MacDill Ave., Tampa, FL.

What a guy......humorous, gregarious and generous! An absolute hoot to be around, whether on the golf course at Palma Ceia or at Timpano's for a weekday libation. I will miss him! Praying that Gary's family experiences God's presence and love in their lives during this difficult time.

Gary was the best. There was nothing in the world better than sitting down with Gary and talking and laughing. No matter what we doing, no matter what it was about . . . it was always just unique, funny and great. Oh man, I'll miss Gary for a long, long time.

Hi there, I'm part of the Clamon Family from Gary's younger years at Manhattan, Madison and Plant schools. I have fond memories of Gary and Aubrey hanging out with my many brothers and running around the South Tampa neighborhoods. We were good kids who looked out for each other and developed lasting friendships. Those of us who knew Gary in his young years are not surprised at the man he became. Please accept my sympathy for you as you mourn his all too young passing. I hope these words from memories of his early life give you some comfort along with the comfort of our loving Lord. May God continue to bless and comfort you all.

I concur with Frank Toney. I likely will not be able to attend Gary's service, because we will be welcoming a new generation; a generation entering as a generation leaves; ironic.

Debbie, Allison, Drew & Hillary,
I wish I had words consoling enough to take away the pain of losing Gary, the pain so many are feeling right now as he has touched so many lives. With time though, the hurt will lessen and we will be left with only positive memories of the happy-go-lucky man that we all have come to love. It is such a rare occurrence these days for two families to grow side by side as neighbors and as friends for 30 years. We are fortunate to have had Gary in our lives for so long, and I cherish the memories made from simply listening to his fantastic stories while sitting on the dock to sharing in life's celebrations of weddings and births. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, and the rest of your family.
Love,
Jessica & Scott

Here's to the guy asking "What's the plan" or offering "To be the wheelman". How fortunate to have had Gary as a boss for many years, and what an honor and joy to know the Dicus family. Just think what a treat those who left before him will have, seeing his smiling face and hearing the colorful story of how he arrived?

A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearings voice that says, "Grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, and the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage,I'm counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease,my soul is at rest. Remembering all,how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions,no matter how small. Go on with your life, don't worry about falls. I miss you all dearly,do keep up your chin until the day comes we're together again"

Dearest Debbie & Family.....
Our hearts are broken now, but our family was blessed: Gary was the first person we met when coming to Tampa, then fate had us living side-by-side for almost 30 years.
Together we have shared every joy and sorrow that life can bring--and a deep friendship was developed in the process.
We will always remember Gary's electric smile & contagious humor...and
that he always had "a plan" in the works. This, sadly, was not part of any plan that mere humans can understand, yet requires our trust.
Sending our love and praying for your healing...

What a great guy - Gary Dicus. You can't help but smile when you say his name - because he was one of the most positive and damn funny guys you will have had the honor to call friend. He had a gift for bringing people together and will be missed terribly by so many. As Gary would say as he turned to walk away....Carry on women!

Gary and I became friends in early 2014. We were able to work together, play golf together, and share dreams about the future design district. I was looking forward to a long friendship and know that my loss is small compared to those that had the privilege of knowing him for many years.
My prayers are with his family, those that were able to work with him, and the many friends he developed. I know he will be missed by many.

Debbie,
I just wrote a long letter of utter shock, however, it was somehow deleted. I was pulling up Ken's obituary, which I have read a thousand times. However, I recently paid for another year if anybody wanted to add anything additional. Well, I saw Gary's name. I obviously thought he was adding a comment to Ken's book. So I opened up the name, only to find your wonderful husband and best friend had passed away! Debbie, I am so utterly and heartfelt sorry. Please know you and your loved one's are in my prayers. May The Lord help you with enduring this tragic loss. I'll be there Friday. My Love and Sympathy, Gloria Wiley
