George Butler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 25 to Feb. 28, 2021.
On March 2, 1961, George E. Butler Sr. and Doretha Smarr Butler welcomed a son into this world, their joy, but also a gift they could never have imaged would touch so many lives. Educated in the Salisbury, North Carolina school system and a graduate of Livingstone College, George would first step into corporate America working for over a decade at Food Lion. Those business skills would prove useful later as George discovered one of his true passions: helping young people get the education they dreamed of. His career in financial aid at Livingstone, Johnson C. Smith University, Winston-Salem State University, Atlanta Technical College and Morgan State University allowed him to help generations of students. His words to so many were, “If you want to go to school, I'll help you get there.” And, of course, there was his music. It was, quite literally, amazing to watch God's hands bless George as he sat down at a piano for the first time. While his peers were happy playing children's games, George was happily focused on playing, and then mastering, the piano. Soon, George could simply hear a song, sit down at the keys and within what seemed mere minutes, play the whole piece, chords and all. By the time he was a teenager, George was the pianist for his church's youth choir. His love for music and natural talent would fill the rafters of Hall's Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church. He also accompanied the BaLu Choir and his beloved GB Ensemble in Salisbury before he moved to Baltimore, Maryland. There, he shared his musical ministry with the congregations of First Brethren, Union Baptist Church, Jovonne First Church and John Wesley United Methodist Church. His God-given gift would serve George well for his entire life. George has now gone home and he joins his parents, grandparents and so many family members in paradise. But, his legacy of love lives on through his sisters: Montina Fox of Salisbury, NC; Diedre Butler of Ft. Washington, MD; his aunts: Lila Mae McCain and Barbara Gaul of Salisbury, NC; a nephew, Elder Ronald Staley (Chima) of Norfolk, VA; a niece, Deborah Staley of Salisbury, NC; a great nephew and great niece, Trenton Staley and Micah Staley of Norfolk, VA; cousins: Jean Leary of Virginia Beach, VA; Leroy Kelsey (Carolyn) of Concord, NC; Janet McNair of Roanoke, VA; Cynthia Butler King (Darryl) of Charlotte, NC; Kim Dunham of Tucson, AZ; Audrey Kelsey of Charlotte, NC, and a host of extended family and friends. But, then, everyone was family to George! To say we miss you doesn't come close to how we're all feeling, George. Your calls, your laughter, and your genuine caring are all things we will treasure deep in our hearts until we see you again. We know you're sitting at the keyboard now filling the heavens with beautiful music. Play on, George, Jr… Public Viewing will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 from 2pm-4pm at Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the family will have a private service that will be publicly extended at 1pm on Sunday, February 28, 2021 via Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc Website (nobleandkelsey.com) Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the Butler Family. Montina and Deidre,

I have been thinking of you and petitioning prayers on your behalf. I have so many fond memories of George and our times together on Institute Street. Though our families were connected years before that, we will always cherish our love for music, our mothers’ bond as classmates, and all the days of laughter we shared. I am so glad that George and I had an opportunity to message each other a few weeks ago. While I was checking on him, he was equally concerned about me and told me to “Stay safe.” As you celebrate his life, it is my prayer that you both find comfort in precious memories of George.

Love,

Tonette

My thoughts are with the Butler Family.
I met George Jr. in Kindergarten at Monroe Street School at 5 or 6 yrs of age. That was the beginning of a Life long friendship. The friendship continued till our last conversation we had Mon/Tues the week he passed. I told him when the weather warmed I would visit him at his Sisters outside due to Covid. I never knew that would be our last time talking nor never dreamed that God would call him home the following Thurs night to Friday morning of that same week. Its still like a dream but I have always been taught God dont make no mistakes. George had many Gifts for his Friends and Family. His Gift that we all can agree upon is his ability to play Piano/Organ by ear. From our Mt. Zion Baptist Church Junior Choir to many other Church and Groups. He will truly be missed. May God continue to Bless the Friends and Family of George Edward Butler Jr. My continued love for you........

“PROVIDING FORWARD”

CHURCH RESOLUTION

February 28, 2021

“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus, will God bring with Him.
- I Thessalonians 4:14

Whereas again in love and infinite wisdom God has sent the death angel; this time releasing and calling into that new and larger life, our beloved member,

Mr. George Edward Butler, Jr.

Whereas Mr. Butler never actually joined First Church of the Brethren, he was an active and committed member of the First Church family for nearly five years. As Minister of Music, he directed the adult choir and played for the “Purposeful Worshippers” youth choir. He brought a new level of spiritually and joy to the music ministry.

In addition, Mr. Butler would regularly bring his aunt, Lila McCain and friends to church. On many occasion he would have other musicians play with him. Mr. Butler truly enhanced the worship experience. We thank God for his life and the blessing of having him as an integral part of our fellowship.

Be it resolved, that we submissively commit Mr. George Edward Butler, Jr.’s spirit into the hands of an all wise God of whom it is truly said, “Our times are in His hands.”

Be it resolved further, that we extend our Christian love and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family and commend them to Him who is able to heal all sorrow.

What I always remember about George is his sense of humor and his positivity. I wish I had known him better, but he was a great classmate at Salisbury High. May the angels welcome you to paradise, George.

The SHS Class of 1979, the old Linn Lane and Institute Street gangs (from a time not that long ago when "gangs" was not a bad word), the friends and classmates from Monroe Street School on through Livingstone College, and all of the congregations whom George graced with his singular talent, have all lost one of our brightest stars. Nearly a week since his passing, I sit here, still stunned, that our time here together has come to an end. But, oh, the memories...they, like my love for George, are eternal and priceless.

Montina, Dee Dee, Aunts Lila and Barbara, Ronald, Neesie, Audrey, Kim, Cynthia and all the family and friends, please accept my deepest condolences. I share in your grief, and also, in time, your healing, as smiles replace our tears when we reflect on the countless good times we shared with George. May he rest in perfect peace. #loveneverdies

No one enjoyed playing the piano in church more than George. It was uplifting to watch him play to the glory of the Lord. Sincere expressions of sympathy to the family.
