George Gazis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2024.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Drossos Gazis, age 76, of Skokie, Illinois. George passed away on August 13, 2024, in his hometown of Lefkada, Greece. Born on December 3, 1947, George led a life defined by kindness, generosity, and brilliance. Known for his caring and supportive nature, he was a dedicated problem-solver and an expert in structural engineering, leaving an indelible mark on his profession and the people with whom he worked.

George earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Structural Mechanics from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), where he also completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Structural Engineering. Over a career spanning five decades, George became a licensed structural engineer whose work can be seen across Chicagoland. He was a member of professional organizations such as the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). His research contributions were featured in the Journal of Engineering Mechanics and at UIC. Before his professional career, George served in the Hellenic Armed Forces.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, George treasured time spent with adored wife, Paraskevi, found joy in talking through engineering solutions with his sons, Drossos and Nikolaos, and found great happiness in vacations with his grandchildren, Arianna and George.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Paraskevi Katopodis Gazis; his sons, Drossos G. Gazis (Andrea) and Nikolaos G. Gazis (Gianna); his cherished grandchildren, Arianna and George; his brothers, Aristidis (Aneta), Steve (Bessie), Peter (Sophia), and Angelo (Athanasia) Gazis; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Drossos and Aspasia Gazis, and his brother Christophoros Gazis.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 22, 2024, following the liturgy at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, located at 2701 North Sheffield Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. George will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of love, intelligence, and generosity will live on through the many lives he touched and the structures he helped build. May his memory be eternal.
