George R. Hogan Sr., 91, of North Charleroi, went to be with his Lord on Friday, May 7, 2010, at the Thorpe's New Dawn Personal Care. He was born Sept. 14, 1918, in North Charleroi, a son of the late John and Ida J. Cooper Hogan. Mr. Hogan was a very active and devoted member of the First Christian Church in Charleroi, where he served on various church committees from a Sunday school teacher, to a member of the church board. He received his Elder Emeritus in 1995. Mr. Hogan served on the North Charleroi Borough Council and the Charleroi Area School Board. He was a charter member and past president of the North Charleroi Lions Club and was also very active in Lionism on the district level, and also was a Melvin Jones Fellow. Mr. Hogan was a member of the Charleroi Lodge 1030 I.O.O.F. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army, battles including both the South Pacific and the Philippines, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Hogan was retired from the U.S. Steel Irvin Works Plant with 42 years of service. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Norma Light Hogan; his son, George R. Hogan Jr. and his wife, Sherry, of Fallowfield Township; his daughter, Molly Breckenridge and her husband, Larry, of Washington Township; 10 grandchildren, Alicia Barefoot and her husband, Barry, David Young and his wife, Lorraine, Scott Young and his wife, Laurie, Marc Sambula, Rachelle Hernandez and her husband, Chris, Heather McCullough and her husband, Glenn, Tracy Bosley and her husband, Joe, Kellie Konek and her husband, Ken, Christian Breckenridge and wife, Alice, and Jonathan Breckenridge; 15 great-grandchildren Dakota, Austin and Keegan Barefoot, Gabrielle and Taylor Bergstedt, Megan and Nathan McCullough, Mia Bosley, Tyler and Calie Konek, Elizabeth and Thomas Breckenridge, David Young, Annabelle and Madeline Young. Also survived by nieces. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Miller; four sisters, Elizabeth Hogan, Minnie Lee, Edith Hogan and Grace Jenion; and two brothers, John and Omar Hogan. In loving memory to a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, he leaves behind dozens of lives he touched, enriched with his kindness, compassion, knowledge and honesty. A man whose soul has moved on, but his spirit will survive in the hearts of those who loved him. Friends will be received Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and 12 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the SCHROCK-HOGAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES INC., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 10, at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church, Walnut Ridge Road, Charleroi, with the Rev. Jim Linn Jr. officiating. Family and friends attending the funeral services are being asked to go directly to the church. Interment will follow with full military rites in the Monongahela Cemetery.
