George Wendt, the actor who as Norm from "Cheers" created one of television's most beloved and enduring characters, died in his sleep May 20, 2025, at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 76.?
Though his acting career spanned over 170 roles across dozens of shows, for most viewers, Wendt was and will always be Norm Peterson, the good-natured grump who haunted television's most famous bar, Cheers, and who was one of just three characters to appear in every episode of the classic show.
"For 11 years on 'Cheers,' we shared a stage, a lot of laughs and a front-row seat to one of television's most beloved friendships," begins a statement from co-star John Ratzenberger, who played Norm's bar pal, the know-it-all Cliff Clavin. "He was a true craftsman - humble, hilarious and full of heart. What you saw on screen was exactly who he was off screen with impeccable comedic timing and a deep loyalty to those he loved … I'll miss our conversations and the quiet moments of friendship that meant the most. My thoughts are with his wife Bernadette, their children, and everyone who loved him."
Wendt was born in Chicago and got his start in acting through The Second City, Chicago's famous improv comedy group that spawned alumni such as Bill Murray, Gilda Radner (1946–1989), John Candy (1950–1994), John Belushi (1949–1982), Dan Aykroyd, Chris Farley (1964–1997), Mike Myers, Jordan Peele, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and many others. He graduated from Campion High School in Wisconsin, then earned his degree at Jesuit Rockhurst College before discovering his love for acting.
Wendt got his start on screen in a small, uncredited role in the 1978 film "A Wedding," then had small parts in shows like "Soap," "Taxi," "Alice," and "M*A*S*H" before being cast in the part that would change his life. From 1982 to 1993, he was on hundreds of episodes of "Cheers" – every single episode, matched only by the characters of Sam (Ted Danson) and Carla (Rhea Perlman). The part all but defined his career.
"I still have dreams about Cheers, isn't that weird?" Wendt told the AV Club in 2009. "I'll be laughing and [Cheers creator James] Burrows will say, 'Oh that's great, let's put that in,' and then I'll wake up and there's no show to put it in."
However, his work spanned far beyond "Cheers" and included extensive stage performances, parts in shows like "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and "Saturday Night Live," movies, and much more. He appeared on Broadway in such shows as "Hairspray" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's," had dozens of movie roles from the 1970s through the 2010s, and most recently appeared on "The Masked Singer" in 2023. From 1984 to 1989, he was nominated for six straight Emmy Awards for his work on "Cheers."
His fans, friends, and especially his co-stars paid tribute to him. Danson said in a statement, "I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie." Perlman said, "George Wendt was the sweetest, kindest man I ever met … It was impossible not to like him. As Carla, I was often standing next to him, as Norm always took the same seat at the end of the bar, which made it easy to grab him and beat the crap out of him at least once a week. I loved doing it and he loved pretending it didn't hurt. What a guy! I'll miss him more than words can say."

Eternally farewell George Wendt best knnown for playing the lovable Norm Peterson on Cheers, 32 years to the day of the sitcom’s finale airing. Wendt “died peacefully in his sleep while at home,” according to his rep, who remembered the actor as a doting family man, a well- loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him.” After years of minor roles on TV series like M*A*S*H and Taxi, the Chicago native, whose sister Kathy is the Mother of actor Jason Sudeikis, had his break through with Cheers in 1982. Wendt, who later secured in another spot in pop-culture history as part of “Saturday Night Live’s “Da Bears” sketches, appeared in all 275 episodes of the sitcom. For sitcom. “For 11 years America waited for him to walk into a bar every Thursday night and say something funny, and they just knew he wouldn’t disappoint,” costar Kelsey Grammer said Gayle King’s Sirius XM show after news of Wendy’s death broke. “He was extraordinarily.” Thanks for making us laugh, coming into our homes every Thursday night Also, you could catch the reruns on Cheers on TV and I grew up watching Taxis, Cheers in 1978, 1982 to Classic TV shows back then. George Wendt will be truly missed, yet be forgotten. As Wendt soul still lives on this earth as his body departs returns eternal Heaven, we all know that he is in a good place now, he reunited with the people that he worked with. My prayers are with you.
RIP Godspeed George Wendt

George is being missed... (As is CHEERS) ... of all the reruns on tv, why is Cheers not in the lineup? It was a great clean show that was family approved! I miss Archie, Edith and of course Ted Danson. (Sam Malone) ..
Please, whoever is able, bring that show back on! So much on tv isn´t worth the time... but because I apparently don´t have a life, I watch anything that watches me back!
Bring CHEERS RERUNS BACK !

Dear Surviving Cheers Cast,
I am sorry to hear about Norm. Last year, I got a birthday message from George because I loved him on Cheers. His iconic entry on the show was very excellent and he would say Good Afternoon, Everyone. Also, everyone else including you would say Nooorm! together. Sorry for your loss. I am a huge Cheers fan and I live in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Several years ago, my son, now deceased, walked into a crowded sports bar in NYC to watch a hockey game. Turning from the bar with a beer, hoping to find an open seat at a table, he saw someone sitting alone, waving him over to a seat. It was George, who offered his hand and introduced himself. My son responded, "Are you kidding? I know who you are!" There followed a very pleasant evening with a TV star who was as down-to-earth as Norm on Cheers. It was one of the highlights of my son´s too-short life. Thank you and RIP George.

Not everyone can say that they have met one of their hero´s, and even less can say they have met and become buddies with one of their hero´s, I can. Many years ago I was cast in a film called Kids in America by my great friend Andrew Shaifer. But before that I did a sit com
pilot with Shaif and he had told me that George Wendt would be in it and doing a scene with us, I was floored. When I was a kid I watched cheers and norm was my favorite character, as I got older and got into comedy and acting i realized that George not Norm was the reason I liked the character so much. His delivery, his facial expressions, his likability all came through the screen and as a kid he became one of my favorite comedic actors. When he walked on the set of the sitcom that day I was in awe, but it wasn´t until we did Kids in America where I got to really meet George and talk to him, and basically follow him around like a puppy dog. From there he knew how much I looked up to him and we were buddies. After kids wrapped I didn´t know if I would see him again, I saw he was coming to town in a play version of 12 angry men. I didn´t know if I would get a hold of him so I reached out to his agent and lefty my number, the next day he called me back. We set it up and got a group together to go see 12 angry men, then Billy Keenan threw a party back at Keenan´s like only he can and George came back and hung with us all night. From there whenever George was on the east coast we would get together. When he played Edna Turnblad on Broadway in Hairspray he helped make my mom´s dream come true when I brought her to the play, we went back stage to visit him and my mom got to see backstage of a broadway play. I took improv classes in New York, wasn´t happy with how I did, but low and behold I forgot all about it because George was in town and we went to a local Irish bar to listen to a bar band. Then came the last time I saw him I was cast in the film Stealing a Survivor and when I read the part of the dad I knew he would be great. When we talked he said Chris I´ll do it for you, and he came and did one hell of a job as always. We took him to the ale house and we had a ball that night, I even put on my cat romper that I wore in the movie and wore it in the bar which made him laugh. We used to text on holidays and birthdays and he would text me when the eagles were doing well. I text him about the new pope being a white Sox fan like him and I never heard back, that´s when I thought maybe something was wrong.
George, I don´t know what to say my man. You made a nobody from Philly, a kid just trying to make it in the buisness feal like an equal, you were so good to me and so nice to everyone of my friends and family who came up to meet you, hell you were nice to everyone. I never once saw you turn down a picture or autograph even if someone was too pushy. In a word George you were a gentleman and one hell of a friend to all who were lucky enough to know you. I hope you walked into heaven and were greated by all you loved that went before you. They say never meet your hero´s, but I met one of mine and he was everything I hoped he would be, he was a friend! Love ya George, thanks for everything!! Until we meet again my man Cheers

Of course we have never met. But he put millions upon millions of smiles on our faces as Norm on Cheers. Some people touch you in ways you will never understand. But for those who suffered during the hard times in their life's will always know that had a friend in George and his ability to make us feel good again.
I wonder if he truly ever realized that about himself.
