Gloria Greenspun Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 19, 2025.
On August 21, 2023 at 12:35 pm Gloria passed away peacefully at Cedar Glen Memory Care home in Rockville, Maryland. She was 8 days from her 97th birthday and succumbed to the cruel ravages of advanced dementia.

Gloria was the beloved daughter of Henry and Ruth Goldberg Schallman and was born and raised in Cleveland with her brother Buddy. She had a happy childhood filled with dogs, horses, sports and friends, graduated from Shaker Heights High School in 1944, attended college, and fell in love with Stanley in 1948 and they were married by Abba Hillel Silver in 1949. Gloria and Stanley were the loving and adored parents of Diane Greenspun. Gloria was 58 when colon cancer took Stanley at 67. She stayed strong and made a full life for herself, traveling the world including China where she rode a camel at the Great Wall.

The 4th generation in her family to do so, Gloria began volunteering in junior high school, helping at a children's home. She was a volunteer for Head Start when it began in 1965, and for 50 years in Cleveland, Highland Park IL, and Hollywood FL she devoted time and talents to community and Jewish communal organizations. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. Gloria was a champion golfer and lifelong accomplished swimmer.

Dogs, animals, sunshine and nature gave her joy. She taught us to listen to the birds, to greet every dog and be worthy of their wag, to be in awe of flowers and get your hands dirty in the soil, to go outside in the middle of the night to look at the stars or a special moon, to travel far with an open mind, try all food, order dessert, and hold the door for people younger than yourself. She sang along to Frank Sinatra even when she had no language left.

Gloria was in the compassionate care of Montgomery Hospice for her last few weeks. Torchinsky Hebrew Funeral Home handled arrangements and, per her wishes, there was no service.
