Gregory Bailey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2024.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Aaron Bailey, a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and Marine Corps veteran, who left this world on September 11, 2024, in Japan, at the age of 59. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 5, 1965, Greg was named in honor of his father's deep admiration for Elvis Presley, receiving his middle name after the legendary musician.

Greg's life was defined by his unwavering commitment to his family, his country, and his passions. A distinguished career in the corporate world saw Greg working in key leadership roles at prominent companies such as Kraft Foods, Schering Plough, Diageo, and Hershey, among others. His business acumen was matched only by his dedication to service, having joined the United States Marine Corps in 1983 and proudly serving his country. He was deployed to Iraq in 2003, and retired from the Corps as a lieutenant colonel in 2013 after an illustrious career.

After his retirement, Greg followed his passion for food, a love that had been present throughout his life. In 2018, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Bailey's Pizzeria and Café on the beautiful island of Awaji, Japan. He had spent three months in Italy learning from some of the country's most renowned pizza chefs, a journey that defined his approach to cuisine and made his restaurant a cherished destination for locals and tourists alike. Greg was a true lover of fine food and wine, particularly favoring Syrah and Zinfandel. He was also an avid baker who nurtured a long-running sourdough starter that had been a constant companion in his kitchen for years.

Greg is survived by his loving wife, Akane; his three sons-Kevin, Kyle, and Kenzie; his cherished daughter-in-law, Chanelle; and his two grandsons, Elliot and Oliver, who were the light of his life. He was predeceased by his father, Fredrick "Pops" Bailey, whom he adored, and is also survived by his mother, Margaret "Grammy" Bailey, who remained an enduring influence throughout his life. Greg leaves behind his siblings: Scott and his wife, Linda; Chris; Lauren; Meg; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, and a great-niece. Greg cherished the outdoors, adventures, and the art of storytelling, traits that endeared him to everyone who knew him.

Greg's life was one of courage, love, and boundless curiosity. Whether in the boardroom, on the battlefield, or behind the counter of his café, he made a lasting impact on everyone he met. He will be deeply missed but will live on through the stories he shared and the lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Charles F. Minney VFW Post 3329 in Millbury (https://www.vfwmillbury.org).

Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Greg's life and remembering the love and friendship he shared with so many during a Celebration of Life at The Maynard Elks Lodge, 34 Powder Mill Rd, Maynard, MA 01754 on Sunday, November 10, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Greg was the best & I´m so sorry to hear of his passing. I worked with him at Scheuring Plough & always admired him. He was incredibly smart, hard working, super humble (something I really respected about him), selfless, capable of anything & basically the encapsulation of all of the traits you´d look for in a business partner & friend. He loved his family & spoke of them often. My heart goes out to Akane & your whole family. If you´re ever in Arizona, please look me up & if there is anything I can ever do for you, please let me know. I know Greg will be dearly missed.

Sincerely, Kevin

We are so shocked and saddened to learn of Greg´s passing. We had known the family since before Kyle was born, and have always been grateful for all the support provided by Greg and Akane during our difficult times. I was so happy and impressed to see them when I had a chance to have lunch at Bailey´s Pizzeria in Japan, knowing how passionately Greg had talked about opening his restaurant one day. Gone too soon. I really don´t know what to say....so sorry. --Manako Ihaya and family

Greg and I served together in 5th Battalion, 14th Marines in the 1990s and in Iraq in 2003. He was a wonderful person and a true patriot. We miss him.

Greg was a fellow Marine and great friend with sound judgment and leadership skills who maintained a positive outlook throughout the most difficult situations. He was highly respected by all of us who served with him and someone to be glad to be with in a foxhole in combat.
