H. L. Hooper Obituary

Retired Quarter Horse Trainer PHILADELPHIA — Services for H.L. "Hoop" Hooper will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at McClain-Hays Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Stacy Madison and Chris Vowell officiating. Burial will be in Cedarlawn Cemetery. Mr. Hooper, 61, died Sunday, August 3, 2008, at his home in Philadelphia. He was a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Philadelphia High School. He attended East Central Junior College where he played football and later attended Mississippi State University. He retired after a career as a trainer in the quarter horse industry. He enjoyed success from Louisiana to California including the winner of the Breeder's Cup Classic "Heisajoy" in 1990. Survivors include his dog, Bandit Hooper; sisters, Mina Hooper Ray of Garland, Texas, and Mary Alice Harthill of Louisville, Ky.; niece, Missy Mills and her husband, Michael, of Garland; nephew, Treyler Ray and his wife, Mary Frances, of McKinney, Texas; great-nieces, Maddie Mills, Sutton Mills, and Mabrey Mills; and great-nephew, Preston Mills. Memorials may be sent to a charity of choice. Pallbearers will be Terry Jordan, Bobby Dees, Alex Dees, Gene Brown, Jr., Bobby Joe Lundy, Donnie Dickinson, Tim Harrison, and Mike Chandler. Visitation will be today from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Hoop was one of a kind. My husband, Mel Zucker, and I will never forget the kindnesses he showed us when he was quarter horse trainer in California. He was generous with his horsemanship, and always a thoughtful and kind-hearted man. Our condolences to all who loved him.
