Harry Booe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2002.
Harry McCann Booe, went home to be with the Lord on April 28, 2002, in Benton, Arkansas. He was born July 20, 1917, in Prairie County, Arkansas. He was a long time resident of Arkansas, raised in Carlisle, and was the son of the late Hosea and Etta Booe. Harry was well known in Arkansas for his family business he started in 1948, Harry's Market. Harry's was a legend around Arkansas, and in the Greater Little Rock Area. Greatly known from the finest in fresh meat to the freshest produce, we can't forget the first ever in-store bakery in Arkansas. Harry's customers always came first. He made sure to greet everyone who walked in the door, and made sure his employees did the same. Harry's has been greatly missed by all of his customers since he retired in 1995 and leased the store building to the U. S. Postal Services for the Brady Station Retail Center. He truly loved the grocery business, and during his years of business, he served on the board of directors for Affiliated Foods, and took great pride in serving central Arkansas. He was a World War II veteran serving in Germany, and a family man. He leaves behind a lovely wife of sixty- one years, Vica Curtis Booe, as well as two sons, James C. Booe of Alexander, Arkansas, and Gerald M. Booe of Little Rock; and one daughter, Nancy Booe Shipe of Alexander. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Booe Smith, of Little Rock. Harry was well-loved by eleven grandchildren: Terry Henley, Tammy Harwell, Tracy McJunkin, Jamie Booe, Chaffin Booe, Brandon Booe, Chris Shipe, Justin Shipe, Sagan Shipe, Haley Shipe, and Sidney Shipe; and six great- grandchildren: Rané Henley, Dustin McJunkin, Chelsea McJunkin, Jessi Harwell, Carley Booe, and Alexis Shipe. Harry came from a large family of four sisters: Imogene McKee of Longmont, Colorado, and the late Jewel Winkle of Houston, Texas, the late Grace Swears and Kathryn Booe of Carlisle; three brothers: Willie Booe of Wichita, Kansas, and the late Buford booe of Little Rock, the late John Booe of North Little Rock. A gathering in Harry's memory will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, in the Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Chapel with Reverend Richard Gifford of Henderson United Methodist Church will be officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 30, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Henderson United Methodist Church, 13000 West Base Line Road, Little Rock, Arkansas 72210, or the Altzheimer Association, 10411 West Markham, Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.

I grew up with Harry's Market. First with my aunt Thelma Cruse and then in my neighborhood, Brookfield. As an adult I enjoyed so much shopping at the market and always seeing Harry smile, bag, check, and walk me to my car. He will be missed like the market has been. He was a great business person and a wonderful man. Vica, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Know that God is with you during this most difficult time.

Sincerely,

Tina Cosgrove-Gorrell
