Harry Bowers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 21, 2024.
Harry Francis Bowers, age 82, of Concord, CA, passed away Nov. 1, 2024, at his home surrounded by family after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Harry was born in San Francisco, CA, and was a lifelong resident of Contra Costa County. He grew up in Walnut Creek and graduated from Los Lomas High School (class of 1960).

Harry met Kathleen Bowers, the love of his life, right after high school, and they were married in 1963. Sadly, Kathy passed away from breast cancer in 1987. He is survived by his daughters Rebecca "Becki" Bowers of Walnut Creek and Karen "Kacie" Boustead, son-in-law Andrew Boustead, and grandsons Keegan and Grayson Boustead of Concord, California.

Harry started his career as an insurance salesman at the Sears department store and, in 1972, opened his own insurance agency, Bowers Insurance Agency. Over his 45-year career in the insurance industry, he served three terms as president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Contra Costa County.

Harry was an active member of the Concord community. He joined the Concord Chamber of Commerce in 1972 and the Rotary Club of Concord in 1981. Harry served as the Chamber president from 1985 to 1986 and is known as the "Father of Fall Fest" for creating the well-loved Labor Day weekend festival that lasted for many years. In 1986, Harry was appointed to the board of directors for the Mount Diablo Hospital District and served for six years. In 1987, Harry joined the board of Hospice of East Bay, serving for 12 years, and was involved in purchasing the Bruns House. Harry held many roles within the Rotary Club, including club president in 1992 and club secretary from 2012-2018.

After retiring from insurance work, Harry volunteered at the John Muir Hospital-Concord Campus and with Mended Hearts. He lived at Carlton Independent Senior Living for six years and at Oakmont of Montecito Assisted Living for two years, where he was active on the resident council and editor of the community newsletter.

Harry loved teaching his children how to cook family recipes and how to barbeque. He was a fan of Science Fiction books and movies, enjoyed aviation, and loved visiting the Kennedy Space Center.

A celebration of life event will be held on Jan. 4, 2025, at noon at the Concord Historical Society located at 1928 Clayton Rd, Concord.

Dear Becki and all of Harry's family. I send sincere condolences on your loss. Harry was one of the first and most welcoming people I met when I moved to Carlton in February of 2021. We shared a breakfast table and BINGO games forthe entire time we lived here. I have my own health related mobility issues but I managed to visit Harry a couople times in huis new home, and we spoke occasionally by phone. Harry introduced me to the publication of our newsletter and the published resident directory maintenance. Thise tasks are now performed by other here but every time I receive a Residents Council Newsletter or adirectory update, I revisit my friendship with Harry abnd ut warms my heart. I plan to attend Harry's Celebration of Lifeservice on the 4th, health oermitting. But Isend all of you prayers for condolence, comfort and healing as Harry's life is celebrated by his family andfriends.
With Prayers for healing, Bob Monaco

I knew Harry from the time I moved to the Carlton in Concord. He was always a shining light with such a great attitude. I'm sure that continued when he moved. I wish the very best to his family and am sure fond memories will be shared forever. Judy Chidester

I worked for Harry from 1980 to 1985 and became a licensed insurance agent during that time. Loved the family feeling of the office and his encouragement always to better my knowledge. Harry was a good friend even after I moved on to another office. I saw him often around town and then when he retired and spent time at Mt. Diablo Hospital checking with family members at the reception desk while their loved ones were in surgery - which was more than a few times having my mom there. He gave a lot of time handling functions in Concord - always available to help with whatever came his way. Harry will be missed by many. Sending hugs to Bekki & Kacie - your dad was very special. I worked with Harry for a very short time. I never even met him but when he needed something done for any one in his family & their personal insurance Harry would always email me the information, I would get it done for him. I will miss Harry, God please take care of Harry, may he rest in peace.

Harry was my uncle, the younger brother of my mother. As a teenager, he would annoy my mom and grandma by building us tree houses. I remember one that had my grandma's kitchen curtains on the window openings. We loved it when he would babysit. I think all us kids (my 2 sisters and I, together with his sister Beverly's 4 children) drove him crazy, but was good natured about it all. He will be sorely missed.
