Herbert Kenny Obituary
MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA — Herbert A. "Arby" Kenny III, 65, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, died suddenly of congestive heart failure on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Salem Hospital.
He was born in Boston, Nov. 18, 1943, Arby was the son of the late Herbert and Teresa (Flaherty) Kenny. He was a graduate of St. John's Prep in Danvers and Georgetown University in Washington.
Drafted by the U.S. Army, he served as a radio technician during the Vietnam War. As a world traveler Arby has lived in Europe, mainly in Monte Carlo and on St. Croix, USVI as well as California, Nantucket, Onset, Salem and Manchester.
Arby was an accomplished sailor. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean twice with a three man crew.
He was a gifted artist, wood sculptor and craftsman, working in Salem for many years.
He held a membership in Bostons Copley Society and the Rockport Art Association and the Nantucket Art Association. His art has appeared in many galleries nationwide as well as private collections. Arby was a kind and gentle spirit, loved by all.
He is survived by his daughters, Julia F. Kenny and Lydia C. Kenny both of Brooklyn, N.Y. ; two sisters, Ann Gonzales and her husband Santiago of Onset and Susan Kenny-Carroll of Manchester-by-the Sea; a niece, Elizabeth Blatchford and her husband Dana and nephews, Adrian Carroll, Matthew Carroll, Owen Carroll and Rafael Gonzalez; a grand-nephew, Ryan Blatchford and many more relatives and friends.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to The New England Organ Bank, Suite 202 One Gateway Center, Newton, MA 02458. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester.

I loved looking at all the pictures in Legacy. Arby had a great sense of humor and was very clever. He is remembered fondly by all.

I met Arby Kenny in the fall of 1957 when my family moved two doors north of his. I was 12 and he 14. Our shared passions in sailboats, the ocean, clever dialogue and high adventure drew us together immediately. Through the high school years we spent endless hours in each others company and he, as the older brother I never had, greatly influenced my view of life during adolescence. I saw his brightness and easy grasp of things admirable following his lead in many, many ways.
After high school we went separate ways in college, both taking sabbaticals and performed our patriotic chore in Viet-Nam returning to Manchester and our adult versions of life. This included a good deal of traveling so we met infrequently but when we did it was as though we’d never been apart. This marks the deepest and truest form of friendship I know of and I will always harbor the feeling that time presents no barrier to our bond.
My life is far richer for the fact of Arby Kenny and the love will yet be present when we next get together.

Arby was a familiar and friendly face at the Witch's Brew. He was always pleasant and polite. He was often working on a crossword puzzle or reading the paper.
I was glad I got to attend his memorial gathering today at the Witch's Brew. He will be missed by many. My sympathy to his daughters, sisters, other family members, and close friends. May his journey to Summerland be pleasant and peaceful.

I spent many a cold Sunday afternoon reading the papers with Arby at the Witches Brew in Salem and discussing current events. He was so smart with a fantastic sense of humor. I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll never forget him.

Arby touched many lives and will truly be missed. I did not know him as well or for as long as others did, but it was always a pleasure talking with him.
I will forever treasure my memories of our discussions about books and the wood carving he made for my son.

I got to know Arby through his co-workers at the woodworking shop in Salem. I enjoyed many evenings of great conversation with Arby at the Witches Brew. He would always ask about my children and how they were doing. As an amateur woodworker I would always appreciate his advice. He was a unique spirit and I will miss him. My sincere condolances to your family with his passing. His success and skill as a craftsman and woodworker has created a legacy of many wonderful opportunities for everyone who knew him to remember him.

Herb Kenny was a classmate of mine at St. John's Prep (1957-1961) and we shared a common interest in the liberal arts while shying away from math and science. I had lost touch with him since then and I am very sorry to learn of your family's loss.

To the family of Arby Kenny my sincere condolences. I have known Arby for several years and would see him frequently after work in the Salem area. He was always pleasant and we had many conversations that usually put a smile on my face. He also knew my two young children by name and was always very nice to both of them when we would have lunch in Salem on weekends. He was truly a special person and it was a priviledge to know him.
