Herbert E. Stone Jr.

Age 82, of Newark, DE, passed away February 7, 2012 at Manor Care, Pike Creek.

Born in Wilmington on August 29, 1929, Herb was the son of the late Herbert and Mildred Fulmer Stone. His career was in communications, working for 37 years in various management, staff and line assignments for Diamond State Telephone, Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania and AT&T. He retired in July 1984 as Regional Safety Manager of AT&T. He also was a safety consultant for the Delaware Safety Council in Kent and Sussex Counties.

He was very active in the community, serving on the Advisory Committee for the Fire Engineering Technology and Safety Management Technology at Delaware Tech, was Past President of the Delmarva Safety Association, Past Vice President of the Gull Point Homeowners Association and the Delaware Boating Council. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Delmarva Safety Association, Traffic Safety Chairman of the Montgomery County (PA) Safety Council, and a member of the Citizens Advisory Council of the former Newark School District, and served on the Board of Directors and Treasurer at Newark Historical Society. Herb was also Publicity Chairman of the telephone Pioneers of America, and Past President of Newark Babe Ruth Baseball and Newark American Little League Baseball. An active member of White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, he served the church as a Deacon and on the Board of Directors of the Cemetery Association.

He is survived by his son, Stuart E. Stone and his wife Eileen of Newtown, PA; two daughters, Susan S. Hassman and her husband Mike of Childs, MD and Lynn S. Lawrence and her husband Steve of Wilmington, DE; 7 grandchildren, Bryan and Kevin Stone, Stacie and Jessica Hassman and Stefanie, Kim and Kasey Lawrence and a great granddaughter, Kinley Wills. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Romaine who died in 2011.

A service honoring his life will be held Sunday, February 12, at 6 pm, at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711. Friends and family may call at the church beginning at 4 pm. Burial will be private.
