Herschel Maltz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 1, 2011.
Herschel Grossman Maltz, of Houston Texas, passed away on the 28th February 2011, at the age of 81.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lynn W. Maltz; his brother Melvin Maltz and his wife Corky; his son Jerry S. Maltz and his wife Ann; granddaughter, Amanda Dee Maltz; grandson, Mason H. Maltz and his wife Shawna; and great-grandson, Porter Guy Maltz; and grandsons Jordan, Taylor, Jeremy, and Ryan Maltz. He is also survived by Lynn's daughter, Elizabeth Weiman and her daughter, Julie Weiman; and son, Ted Weiman and his wife Rachel; and great-granddaughter Kira May; and by Lynn's son, Tony Schram and his wife Brenda, and their daughters, Melissa and Elizabeth Schram. Herschel was preceded in death by his parents I. B. and Nettie Maltz, his first wife Delores Breitenbach Maltz, and his son Bruce Maltz.

Herschel was born in Houston, Texas, on October 5, 1929 and graduated from San Jacinto High School. He then attended Texas A&M, graduating in 1950 with a degree in Business Administration. While there, he played first base for A&M's baseball team. Shortly after graduation, Herschel joined the family business, Century Papers, and later became its president and CEO. During the next forty years, he expanded the business into a multimillion dollar company, before selling it to Chemed Corporation. After selling the company, he became a marketing and financial consultant to public and privately held firms and also served as a director of several public companies including Sterling Electronics, Charter Bancshares, and National Sanitary Supply. After retiring, he became a mentor and business advisor to small businesses as a member of the Silver Fox organization.

He was actively involved in the Houston community all of his life, participating in such organizations as the Anti-Defamation League, United Way, Goodwill Industries, National Conference of Christians and Jews, Volunteers of America, National Jewish Hospital in Denver, American Coaches Sports Hall of Fame, Young Presidents Organization, and World Presidents Organization. In addition, he was a passionate Texas A&M alumni, a founding member of the President's Endowed Scholarship fund, and a recipient of many awards, including the Texas A&M's Distinguished Alumnus Award, Houston's Outstanding Aggie, and the Presidents 12th Man Foundation.

Herschel is remembered by all as a rare man of integrity and as a devoted family man. His kindness, warmth, and generous character touched all who knew him. He and his wife traveled the world, taking their children and grandchildren on many trips. Herschel's optimistic and loving spirit will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
The family offers special thanks to Herschel's wonderful caregivers, Lena Cooper, Lisa Castillo, and Doneisha Rogers, who gave so much of their time, love, and devotion to his needs over the last several years.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 2nd of March, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 3rd of March, at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood Boulevard in Houston.

The graveside service will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Beth Israel Memorial Gardens on Antoine Street in Houston.

All are invited to greet the family during a Minyan service which is to be held at half-past six o'clock that evening, at Congregation Beth Israel.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Herschel's name be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, 2242 West Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, TX, 77030-2008; or to the charity of one's choice.

I worked for Mr and Mrs Maltz in their home and in Mr Maltz business office in the early 2000s. My memories are still very much alive of that special time them and receiving the benefit of their kindness as I performed administrative tasks for them. They were a beautiful husband and wife and I observed how dearly devoted they were to one another. They came to my husband´s funeral service in 2006 to show support and sympathy for me during that very difficult time. Mrs Maltz if you happen to read this in 2023 I want you to know I had a dream last night that I was visiting with you and Mr Maltz and it was very important to me in that dream. Love and light to you and Mr Maltz. Fondly, Carol Gonsoulin

Life is a journey that has many twists and turns. it is also like what Forest Gump use to describe as a box of chocolates, you never knew what you were going to get. But with Herschel and Melvin Maltz you knew exactly what you you were going to get, and what promises were made, were promises kept. Those promises were the words of two great men who were brothers, promising African American athletes that if you come to A&M you will be part of a family that will honor, defend and aid you as part of a network that reached around the globe.

Herschel Maltz with the aid of other great Aggies such as Don Morris, Bob Lang, John Eagleson, and many others, sought to create a color blind society in the old Southwest Conference that judged young athletes not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. As an African American graduate of Texas A&M University I stand on the shoulders of great men like Herschel Maltz. I will miss him, for he truly was a shining star in the history and evolution of what is present day Texas A&M University. My fellow Distinguished Alumnus of Aggieland I salute you, and I thank you for the immense contributions you made to the school "We Think So Grand."
