Howard Keon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 1, 2016.
Rev. Howard J. Keon, CSB
Peacefully, November 1 at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto after suffering a serious fall at night in his bedroom at Anglin house just a few hours after celebrating his 96th birthday on October 14. Father Howard was the oldest of four children of Clare Cameron and James Keon. He was predeceased by his brothers Michael and Fr. James, CSB and survived by his sister Madeline Adams and her three children. Father Howard flew 30 bombing missions for the RCAF over Germany in 1944 and was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war Howie was inspired by his brother Jim to also take vows with the Basilian fathers in 1953. After his ordination, also in Toronto, in 1957, he taught for two years at Assumption College School. He then began his many years of ministry in Lethbridge AB, teaching at Catholic Central HS from 1960 to 1973 and as assistant pastor at Our Lady of the Assumption Church from 1980 to 2000. Fr. Howard was also novice master in Rochester NY from 1973 to 1980. After retiring at 80 years of age in Lethbridge he moved to Toronto at Soulerin House from 2003 to 2007 when he moved to Anglin house until his death. Fr. Keon received the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award in 2007. Visitation will be held Friday, November 4 from 9 AM until a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in the Chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, followed by internment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill ON. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Basilian Fathers' Retirement Fund, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto M5S 3C2.

I met him as a student at the Assumption elementary school around the corner from the church. I have fond memories of talking to him, he was always kind and as a kid who questioned religion, he answered questions with care and kindness, descanse en pas.

We are moved by and grateful for the many inspiring and loving messages sent by friends of our dear Father Howard. Imagine how fortunate we were to have him in our family!

He was my Champion when brother Michael teased me and made me cry; our Chum when Jimmy and I wanted to play cards; Mother's Darling when he gave her his first paycheque; Dad's Pride and Joy when he became an Aeronautical Engineer; everyone's Hero when he won the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross)in World War II.

When Howard became a Priest we knew it was the only vocation for him. The love, goodness, patience and devotion he had always shown were right for the calling my brother Father Jim knew was Howie's destiny.

Thank you from his sister Madeleine, nieces Anne and Paula and nephew Andrew; great nieces and nephews Matt, Nick, Marisa, Jennifer and Mike; great-great niece and nephew, Peyton and Ethan.

Fr. Keon was a true Canadian who loved to say "eh". We once had a bet going as to how many "ehs" he would say in one Physics class. If I recall, his highest count was 100 "ehs". Denise remembers when Fr. Keon made visits to Assumption School. The children loved him and lined up for hugs. He addressed each child by name and said something personal to each that he squeezed. They just melted into his gentle arms and felt the true peace of Christ. We will never forget you Fr. Keon and you will always remain in our prayers.

Father Keon was our family friend for many decades and until fairly recently we had kept in touch on an annual basis. When you were with Father Keon, you had his complete attention, and he treated you as though you were the most important person in his life at that moment. I have never met a more saintly humble and prayerful man. He preached the gospel everywhere by his humble, caring attentiveness to each and every person he encountered. I expect that, like St Thesese of Lisieux, he will "spend eternity doing good on earth", just as he did in his earthly life.

Dear (Uncle) Father How, my mother's oldest brother was a warm, sweet loving man, so kind to all. Although he spent so many years away from us while living in Lethbridge, New York etc, we always enjoyed our annual summer visits, and just picked up where we left off, beginning with a bear hug that made my ribs crack!

I was so blessed to have been his niece and those many visits Mom and I had with him upon his retirement and return to Toronto. I was with him in hospital after his devastating accident, and he still smiled and never complained. The staff at St. Michael's Hospital were so good to him and tried to keep him comfortable and I thank them. I was fortunate to have been with him as he passed from this world to the next peacefully. He will be missed.

When Fr Keon visited my elementary school in Lethbridge (St. Patrick's), everyone was always so excited to see him. He was an amazing story teller and people were just drawn to him. Everyone loved him and he loved us all back. And he gave some of the best, warmest hugs. Although maybe not as giddy as elementary school kids, everyone was always still excited to see him during his visits to our middle and high schools. I've always remembered him and his spirit will never be forgotten.

"I have fought the good fight, I finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

Although words cannot express what Father Howie Keon meant to our school and community, the legacy he leaves behind will forever resonate within the hallways of Catholic Central High School. Father Keon has certainly taught us what it means to embrace all of life's adventures and challenges, while maintaining ones's faith. His warm (and tight) embrace and generous and loving heart will always be remembered. May eternal rest and perpetual light shine upon Father Keon now and forever.

Though I'm no longer a practicing Catholic, I greatly appreciated the kind and gentle nature of Father Keon when I was growing up in Lethbridge. He always remembered people's names at church at at school, an effort that meant so much to so many. His stories of being somewhat of a wild man in his younger days connected all of us, since no matter where we come from, we are all capable of leading a loving life. Thank you for the lessons.

He loved his fellow man, one person at a time. He remembered the name of almost everyone he met, even if only once, and would greet you by it at communion. Father brought the greatness of God from the grand universal scale down to the level of a personal, intimate loving relationship, one on one, between ourselves and the Devine. He showed me how to relate to God on a human level, to talk to Him constantly as I would to a best friend and to appreciate the Love and guidance that only He can provide. Fr. Howie served as a perfect example, living a happy, holy and humble life and by helping anyone he could in a loving, non-judgmental way. He cared for sick, helped the poor and visited the elderly, the children and anyone else that he possibly could. He spread God's word through his humorous stories. He prayed constantly. He lived his life as close to the way of Christ as was humanly possible. If you ever need to ask yourself "What would Jesus do?", the answer would be "exactly the way that Fr. Keon did it". He made the concepts of God and the Catholic Church into something I and many, many others could easily understand and directly relate to in our everyday lives. Now when I face the many challenges to my faith, I think of Father Howie, and it makes me feel stronger, my prayers come much easier and I am comforted knowing that there now is a true Saintly friend in heaven to hopefully watch over me and my family and help keep us safe. I feel truly Blest by knowing Father Keon and because of him, I know there is a God and I am not afraid of what comes after this world. Thank you Father Howie for everything thing and know we will always treasure your memory with love and a smile.

November 3, 2016

My deepest sympathy to all his Family, he was an amazing person and a friend to all he met. May his soul be in Gods hands for eternity! He will be dearly missed! Some of the best Live-In's were with Father Keon RIP

Fr. Howie was larger than life itself in his humility, patience, generosity and kindness. He was the epitome of respect, given and earned. Claim your eternal reward Father, you have earned it.

Father Keon loved students and they loved him. After he retired from teaching in Lethbridge, he continued to visit several schools each week in our school division . . . for decades. Always humble, always kind with a most generous and listening heart and welcoming hugs. We were never more calm or at peace as young people growing up, than we were in his presence. Father Keon was our teacher in high school: patient, gentle, kind and highly intelligent. We were blessed to have him perform our marriage ceremony and bapitze our children, and he remembered us in his Christmas mass and cards for many following years. He loved to tease, to laugh, and to give and receive hugs. He lived and modeled unconditional love, never judging, consistently walking the path of his true faith, the most "priestly" priest we have ever known, a living saint. Our sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Fr Howard Keon had such a positive impact on so many lives including my own. I can vividly recall our experiences with him in elementary school. Us sitting on the floor in a circle at his feet, as he spoke & it was all throughout elementary school. And his HUGS! Man he gave strong hugs!!!
My time as an altar server during my youth also gave me a wonderful chance to be graced with his presence more often. He has such a kind soul and warm heart for everyone.
He could remember most of the kids names for years - although he used to purposely call me Jennifer instead of Stephanie just to get a laugh.
My last memory of seeing him in person was a beautiful experience with a biggest & best hug!
He will be missed but REMEMBERED FOREVER.
