Hugh Batten, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2015.
Hugh Lewis "Grandaddy" Batten, Jr., 82, of Ruckersville passed away Monday, September 21, 2015 at the Piedmont Hospice House.
Born December 21, 1932, he was the son of the late Hugh Lewis Batten, Sr. and Samantha Batten.
Hugh was a U.S. Air Force and Navy Veteran having served his country honorary and obtaining the rank of SSGT prior to retiring from the Air Force. Following retirement, he continued to serve his country with the U.S. Naval Reserves. The last years of his life were spent living with his grandson, Dwayne Batten and wife, Teresa and their children. He brought so much to joy to their family and they were so grateful for the time they were able to spend and care for him. In addition to spending time with his family, Hugh enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his grandson, Dwayne and wood working. He will be greatly missed by all of those who loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mason Batten and stepmother, Nellie Batten.
Survivors include his daughter, Diane Elizabeth Weaver and husband, Stewart of Amherst; grandsons, Dwayne Allen Batten and wife, Teresa of Dyke and James Matthew Batten of Amherst; two great-grandchildren, Jaylene Batten and Landen Batten; brother, Doug Batten and wife, Virginia of Fishersville. He is also survived by special brothers-in-law, Butch Meek and Randy Meek, who he thoroughly enjoyed spending time when they came to visit.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Augusta Memorial Park with Pastor Clayton Payne officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes, 618 W. Main St.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his nurse, Jaye Dale Morris, for her support and dedication to Mr. Batten during the last year of his life and the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont for their care shown over the last several days.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice of the Piedmont, Attn: Development Office, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Hugh was a special part of my life when I lived in Waynesboro. I remember going to the drive-in movies in his Model A. Moving to Calif. to live with my sister was not my choice. Life took us in different directions. Hugh was always a gentleman.

My sympathy to all his family. He was truly a good person.

Grandaddy, while we knew you only a short time, you will always be remembered as a dear friend. As their angel now in heaven, keep a watch over Dwayne, Teresa, Jaylene and Landen who love you dearly. Dwayne and Teresa, know that he is now in peace looking down on you from heaven and cherish the memories Grandaddy provided.

Hugh,

I'll miss you very much. You were more of a Father to me, than a Father-in-Law. You and Stella both made me feel so special, a part of the family. I'll continue to love and care for your daughter, my wife, forever. Thank you for giving her to me. So, no worries!

Love,

Stewart
