Ian Hollan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 31, 2025.
Ian James Hollan was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent the bulk of adult life in Washington DC. He passed away on July 22,2025 at the age of 47. In the 47 short years that Ian lived, he was many things to many people. He was a son to John and Deborah Hollan. A brother to Stephanie, (Christopher, brother in law), James, and Jackie. He was an uncle, cousin, nephew, colleague and friend to many.

Born on March 31, 1978, Ian attended St. Thomas More grade school and St. Ignatius High School, where he graduated in 1996. Ian loved football, and continued his passion playing at Mount Union College where he graduated in 2000. Ian obtained two Master's Degrees, and continued to be a lifelong learner, acquiring many certificates and awards in his professional career.

After college, Ian enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, followed by continued service in the Coast Guard Reserves until his passing, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His civilian employment also found him working for the Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. His military and civilian career earned him numerous commendations for his work and leadership. His commitment to his country was unwavering and a source of inspiration to those who knew him.

Ian's hobbies and interest help define who he was. He enjoyed cooking, cooking and cooking some more. Our family remembers his great holiday extravaganzas. Opening a cupboard or refrigerator revealed spices few have heard of. His love for travel helped him enjoy restaurants and chefs from around the world.

On August 14th, 2025, a funeral service will be held to honor Ian's life and service at Mary Queen of Peace Church, 4423 Pearl Rd. Cleveland, Ohio 44109. A greeting reception will begin at 11am, followed by Mass at noon. A luncheon and Celebration of Life will be at Brennans Banquet Center, 13000 Triskett Rd. Cleveland, Oh. 44111 following mass.

On August 15, 2025, at 9:45 a.m., military honors will be rendered graveside at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd. Seville, OH. 44273

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Mary Queen of Peace Church.

Ian's passing has left an enormous hole in the hearts of those who loved him, but his legacy of love and service will carry on in the many lives he touched.

I served with Ian while active duty in the CG, and later as a civilian. He was a highly knowledgeable professional, and one of those rare individuals who was always good for a laugh no matter the situation, and made the work space more enjoyable. He will be missed.

Ian won me over in 2015 with his smile, charm, quick wit, and good looks (the beard!). Through our ups and downs over the years, we always found our way back to each other. I´ll miss everything about our time together - especially the little things like his love of snacks and Reese´s, his obsession with rewatching Law & Order, The Office, and Seinfeld, his ability to memorize movie quotes, the way he quickly befriended every bartender, and the way he would slip into Boston or Irish accents. I´m heartbroken, yet forever grateful to have been part of Ian´s life. He will be deeply missed.

It feels like yesterday going to The Pub in Lakewood after a long weekend working security for the Mountain Dew Games. Ian and I were peers in the CG but I looked up to him as a friend and mentor. We stayed in touch over the years checking in and reminiscing about co-workers and long nights at Around the Corner. I´m going to miss you old friend. "Prepare to fire!"

Ian has been one of my closest friends for the last 20 years. A consistent source of wit, encouragement, support, with the right mix of skepticism.

I will miss his friendship, eye rolls, and the talking out of the side of his mouth like it was always a secret.

Thank you, Ian, for including me in your great big life.

I had the privilege of knowing Ian for nearly 10 years as both a colleague and a friend. I will deeply miss hearing about the latest incredible restaurants he´d discovered, his enthusiastic food recommendations, and the joy he took in sharing them. His charming laugh, quick wit, and those classic eye rolls brought so much warmth and humor during our conversations. He leaves behind a quiet space that will be hard to fill. My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.
