J.F. Ogden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 2 to Jun. 4, 2006.
J.F. "Fil" Ogden 7/19/1913 ~ 5/30/2006 John Filbrun Ogden peacefully passed away on May 30, 2006, of natural causes in Salt Lake. He was born July 19, 1913, in Tremonton, Utah to Josiah Pinkney Ogden and Mary Jane Dee. From his humble beginnings, Fil developed the value of discipline and hard work which he shared with his posterity. He also developed a deep concern and affection for the "underdog." Fil enjoyed helping the less fortunate; and many of his acts of charity were unknown. In high school and college he excelled in athletics, holding Utah State awards in track and field, played football, and boxed in Madison Square Garden during the AAU Golden Gloves competition. He enjoyed a brief professional boxing career winning 12 of 13 bouts. Later in life he took up golf which he loved and pursued until age 90. Fil attended Weber College, where he was a student body officer, and the University of Utah. At Weber College he was smitten by a lovely young lady, Hermese Broadbent, who continued her education at BYU. They were married after a four year courtship on August 25, 1937, and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. Fil studied business management in college and had an illustrious career with several major corporations including Firestone, UniRoyal, Whirlpool, Westinghouse and Curtis Mathes. His corporate positions included Manager of Dealer Development, Manager of Company Stores, Manager of business management and Senior Vice President. During his career, Fil was featured by Time Magazine as the NARDA Man of the Year. He also served for many years on the National Small Business Advisory Board in Washington DC. Additionally, Fil taught for eight years at a special summer management program at Notre Dame University. He authored several business management books and various corporate management manuals. During the majority of his working life, Fil lived in the mission field and served in numerous branch, ward, stake and regional callings. Fil adored his wife, Hermese, who preceded him by three years. Fil often stated Hermese was the best thing that ever happened to him. We have comfort in knowing that they are now together again. Fil is survived by his son, Larry (Judy) Ogden, California; and his daughter, Mary Jane (Dennis) Gordon, Salt Lake; sister, Dorris (Ray) VanDuren, Salt Lake; six grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 5th, 11:00 a.m. at the Cottonwood Heights 5th Ward, 7075 South 2245 East, Salt Lake. Family and friends may call at the ward from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Lehi City Cemetery. Cannon Mortuary Funeral Directors. The family would like to graciously thank the loving members of the 5th Ward for the warm embracing care which was shown their parents over the past years.
