Jack Shand Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 12 to Dec. 13, 2006.
JACK DWAYNE SHAND January 13th, 1932 December 10th, 2006 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Shand after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. Jack was a devoted husband, loving father, adored grandfather, great grandfather and a friend to many. Jack was born in Hawarden, SK and spent his childhood growing up in Cutknife. It was shortly after the passing of his father, that Jack moved to Saskatoon. It was there where he first spotted Louise MacLean and proclaimed "that is the woman I am going to marry ". Always being true to his word, they were married on June 30th, 1955. Soon after the children started coming and kept coming until Jack finally had his baseball team, which he proudly liked to show off at Atton's Lake annual August long weekend slow pitch tournament. His family was his pride and joy and he had lots to be proud of. To all of them he instilled a love of family, and a strong work ethic, and an appreciation of life and friends. Jack joined the Saskatoon Fire Department in 1957 where he served for 34 years, where he was fondly remembered as "Captain Jack ", retiring on July 7th, 1991. As well as being a firefighter, he also joined Bride City Roofing with a few friends and colleagues. Jack was an avid golfer and curler and freely devoted time and energy to the Granite Curling Club, Saskatchewan Curling Association, Saskatoon Firefighter's Curling League and Atton's Lake Golf Club. Jack will be loved and remembered by his wife, Louise; children, Guy (Dianna) Shand; Marie (Steve) Poitras; Lorraine (Wayne) Schmidt; Don (Jamie) Shand; Donna (Jerry) Skopyk; Darcy (Belinda) Shand and Jacquie (Doran) Scott; twenty grandchildren, Michael (Brandi); Jennifer (Jay); Matthew, Channing (Lindy); Jason; Joel (Nicki); Ryan (Lisa); Stefanie (Mark); Kyle and Bryan; Ryan and Skylar; Daryl, Dawn, Breanna; Scott, Spencer and Jack; Ezrie and Kadance; two great grandchildren, Adia and Emily; in-laws, Lucy Ross; Eileen Buchanan; Violet Mallett; Yolande MacLean and Richard MacLean; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Shand; infant brother, James; uncle, Bill (Eva) McNernie and uncle, Len (Dot) McNernie; parents-in-law, John and Anna MacLean; brothers-in-law, Hughie (Peggy) MacLean; Mervin Ross; Garnet Buchanan; Norville Mallett and Don MacLean; sisters-inlaw, Jeanette Fiddler and Dorothy (George) McIvor. A special thank you to all our friends and family for your prayers and help. Thank you to all the doctors and staff and the Cancer Radiation and Chemo Staff and Palliative Care, health nurse and our parish nurses and father. You're awesome! Vigil for Jack will be held on Wednesday, December 13th, at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m. Both services from St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church (1902 Munroe Avenue) with Rev. Monsignor Len Morand as the celebrant. "Till we meet again ". In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the MD Society (Unit #3 3012 Louise Street, Saskatoon, SK S7J 3L8), the Saskatoon Cancer Research Centre (20 Campus Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 4H4) or the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

Aunt Louise and Family:
May the pain of losing Uncle Jack be eased by knowing he is in a good place with people we all love. When I think what Dad was like, I think the same way of Uncle Jack. A wonderful man with always somthing nice to say, with a smile. He will never be forgotten.
Love,
Brian, Claudette, Scott, and Sean

Louise and Family,
I was deeply saddened when Lorraine called to say that Jack had
passed away. I know he will be deeply missed by all of you. I am
sorry that I was not able to attend Jack’s funeral, but my thoughts
and prayers have been with you all. It was an honour to have been
Jack’s sister-in-law. Louise, you and Jack were a great inspiration to your children and individuals whose lives you touched. In September 2006, you and Jack made a special trip to Edmonton to bring me comfort during a difficult time; which is a memorable occasion, long remembered. Ah’ yes, all the many family encounters and memories!
Jack was always such a steadfast gentleman. Everyone really
enjoyed his presence. It brings me great comfort knowing that he will
spend his first Christmas in Heaven with Jesus and Don.
God Bless you all!

Auntie Louise, Guy, Marie, Lorraine, Don, Donna, Darcy, Jacquie, spouses, grandchildren & great-grandchildren: we wish to extend our deepest condolences on the passing of your husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. We know Uncle Jack will be greatly missed by you all. Like our dad; family was the most precious part of his life. We are sorry we were not able to be with you at your time of grief, but may it comfort you in knowing that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I think the following little poem may be a good reflection of both your love of Uncle Jack and his love of his family.
In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole.
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
God Bless and may your memories bring you comfort!
Love,
Brian, Cheryl, Kevin & Diane
