James Dobbins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 11, 2025.
James A. "Alan" Dobbins, age 86, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. Born on October 14, 1938, in Jackson, Ohio, he remained deeply connected to his roots throughout his life.

A proud graduate of Jackson High School, James went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy for two years. Following his military service, he built a successful career as a self-employed businessman.

James was a devout Catholic whose faith was central to his daily life. He prayed the rosary every day and never missed Sunday Mass. He was a longtime member of St. Pius X Church.

He loved watching movies, chatting with neighbors, telling corny jokes and mind puzzles, and simply enjoying the peace of staying home. One of his most cherished possessions was his Toyota truck.

Above all else, James was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 63 years Ann; son Jeffery (Melodie) Dobbins; and daughter-in-law Debbie (Rick) Dobbins; grandchildren Chris Hoffman, Megan Elrod, Chasity and Sheena Curl, Colby and Nick Winslow, Jeremy and Nicole Niemi; great-grandchildren Ethan and Carter Dobbins, Brooklyn Curl, Donovan Hess, Jordyn and Jazz Owens, Aiden and Kinsley Winslow, Eli Timmen, and Wrenley Elrod.

He also leaves behind nephew Michael Dobbins; nieces Toni Dobbins, Danetta Adams, and Christina Dobbins.

James was preceded in death by his parents Alice Brewer and Lawrence Dobbins; son Richard "Rick" Dobbins; daughter-in-law Melodie Dobbins; grandson Charles James "CJ" Dobbins; brothers Richard and Leonard Dobbins; sisters-in-law Lois Dobbins, Joann and Linda Dobbins; nephew Stephen Dobbins; nieces Kimberly LaCourse, Kathryn Crouch and Jane Dobbins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 12:00 PM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church located at 215 Columbia St., Jackson, Ohio 45640. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery at 12 Fairmount St., Jackson, Ohio 45640. A luncheon will follow at the church after burial.

I´m deeply saddened by the passing of my dear father-in-law. He was a great person. A source of wisdom, kindness, and strength. I will miss his stories, jokes, magic tricks, riddles and laugh. I will always cherish the memories we shared. Though he is no longer with us, his love and legacy will live on in our hearts forever. Rest in peace.

Thank you for being the special uncle that you were. You were a second father to the 5 of us. You were the one that taught me how to ride my bike although you did have to put the training wheels back on! And all the time spent patiently throwing the 4 littles into the lake while the older kids went skiing! You are deeply loved and missed.

One of my favorite memories of Alan, besides his zany sense of humor, was the Christmas he saved the day for us! It was the year Baby Alive just came out, and it was the only present Carol wanted. I´d tried everywhere to find one...no luck. Then just a few days before Christmas, Alan was walking past the catalog dept. in Sears, and he heard one of the employees saying they´d just had a Baby Alive returned. Alan spoke up and said `I´ll take it!´ That just shows you what a great guy he was!
